Second Saturday Practice Session Report - Results

Mika Hakkinen took just under 1.2 seconds off last year's pole time on his way to set the fastest time of the session ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher. David Coulthard was 4th ahead of an impressive Eddie Irvine and Jarno Trulli.

The top 6 drivers have already beaten the pole time of last year while the top 3 are under the 1:19 mark. Qualifying will see times in the low 1:17's if not the high 1:16's!

It was Michael Schumacher who was the first to break the pole time of last year setting a stunning time of 1:18.456 which was over 1.5 seconds faster than his nearest rivals. Later in the session though Hakkinen managed to go even better and beat that time by 1.74 seconds.

The session had several incidents with Heinz Harald Frentzen stopping on the track, Kimi Raikkonen crashing into a barrier, Enrique Bernoldi crashing into a barrier and Mika Hakkinen close behind picked up his front wing! and on the final minute of the session Fisichella spun at Rascasse, hits the rail and stops in the middle of the track blocking everyone behind him and causing a traffic jam!.

Luciano Burti having crashed in the first session didn't take part in the second session as his car was being repaired. Kimi Raikkonen only did 7 laps before crashing while Frentzen only covered 8 laps before stopping on the track. Bernoldi managed 13 laps before his crash. Pedro de la Rosa covered the most number of laps with 21 followed by Panis, Coulthard and Trulli all of whom did 20 laps. Most other drivers covered between 14 and 19 laps.

A thrilling qualifying session is awaiting us with Ferrari and McLaren appearing very close while Williams seem to be just a little bit behind. Traffic here can easily spoil a flying lap so timing and a bit of luck will be crucial this afternoon. Stay tuned.
