Second Thursday Practice Session Report - Results

It was Mika Hakkinen's turn to go fastest this session following Michael Schumacher's domination in the first. Mika set the fastest time 30 minutes into the session and no one came close. In the final minutes, Michael Schumacher reduced the gap to under half a second but that is a big gap. Ralf Schumacher was third over a second behind however he crashed in the final minutes of the session. Barrichello was 4th ahead of Trulli and Coulthard who lost a lot of time after touching the barrier and was in the pits for most of the session waiting for his car to be repaired.

The session was filled with incidents and the biggest was that of Juan Pablo Montoya who crashed and forced the session to be stopped for a few minutes until the track was cleared. Fernando Alonso hit the steel barrier but managed to get back to the pits but he had damaged the suspension and didn't go back out. David Coulthard touched the barrier and lost time because of that and Ralf Schumacher had a big crash at the end of the session.
Several drivers spun with Irvine spinning twice but recovering on both occasions while Panis spun and recovered but stalled the engine ending his session early. 

The gap between the cars appeared to have shrunk until Mika Hakkinen put his fastest time. At one stage he was over a second faster than anyone else. The session ended with only Michael Schumacher less than a second behind him. The top 7 are separated by 2 seconds while the top 15 are separated by 3 seconds. 
Montoya managed to close the gap between himself and his team-mate to just over a second despite crashing during the session. Luciano Burti though is still struggling even after covering a massive 51 laps in both sessions he remains just under 3 seconds slower than his team-mate Jean Alesi. Alesi has been impressive in the Prost managing 8th in a car that is usually at the back. He is ahead of both Saubers who run the same engines and is the best running Michelin behind Ralf Schumacher.
Giancarlo Fisichella in the Benetton continued his good form on this track setting the 11th fastest time ahead of both Jaguars and Saubers.

Michael Schumacher covered the most number of laps this session with 30 laps followed by Barrichello and Trulli with 28 each while Luciano Burti did 27 laps. Pedro de la Rosa didn't do any laps this session due to his accident in the first session while Fernando Alonso only managed 6 laps before hitting his car and damaging the suspension. Olivier Panis only covered 6 laps as well after spinning early in the session. David Coulthard and Juan Pablo Montoya only managed 14 laps with both drivers suffering incidents. Most other drivers covered between 18 and 26 laps.

It will be an interesting day on Saturday as there is no doubt that the Pole time from last year will be broken as Hakkinen is under 0.4 seconds away from it. It also looks like it could be close between Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and even Jordan.
