Qualifying Session Report - Results

David Coulthard grabs his second Pole position of the year in a thrilling battle between himself, his team-mate Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. Coulthard managed to win pole on his last run after Michael Schumacher held provisional pole for the last 20 minutes before. Mika Hakkinen held provisional pole for a while midway through the session but lost it to Michael. He made a mistake on his final run and failed to improve and ended up in 3rd place. Rubens Barrichello was 4th not too far behind Mika however Rubens never really made an impression this weekend. Ralf Schumacher ended up 5th over half a second off the pace. He made a mistake on his final run and couldn't improve. Eddie Irvine was one of the surprises of the session ending up 6th on the grid, making this his best qualifying result this year and the only one inside the top10.
Juan Pablo Montoya only managed 7th and was over 0.7 seconds slower than his team-mate Ralf Schumacher while Jarno Trulli was 8th in the first powered Honda car with Jacques Villeneuve close behind. Giancarlo Fisichella is the other surprise of this session qualifying the Benetton in 10th place. Fisichella does well here.
Other impressive performances were from Alesi who managed 11th and Alonso in 18th once again putting the Minardi ahead of other stronger teams.

The session started with cars going out earlier than expected with the 2 Arrows going out first followed by Villeneuve then Burti and Frentzen.
Mika Hakkinen was the first of the top drivers to go out and took provisional pole in the 22nd minute. Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard go out a few minutes later and while Coulthard takes provisional pole from Hakkinen, Michael aborts his run.
Just after the halfway mark in the session, Michael Schumacher on his second run moves into 2nd place while Coulthard improves his time remaining in 1st. A few minutes later Hakkinen takes provisional pole from Coulthard.
In the 41st minute Michael Schumacher on his 3rd run takes provisional pole from Hakkinen. He keeps provisional pole all the way until the last run from David Coulthard who puts in an impressive lap and takes Pole with a gap of 0.201 seconds.
1 second separates the top 5 while 2 seconds cover the top 13 drivers.

There were no major incidents during the session however Frentzen spun on his final run and wasted his flying lap and Michael Schumacher on his last flying lap touched the barrier on the inside and stopped on the track.

Michael Schumacher covered 11 out of the allowed 12 after aborting his first run, Ralf Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen also did 11 laps aborting both made mistakes on their last run and aborted. Fisichella and Bernoldi also covered 11 laps while all the rest completed their allowed 12 laps.

Arrows and Sauber were disappointing as they appear to have cars not suited to this track. Jordan were also disappointing even though Trulli ended up 8th, he was 2nd here last year. Even Williams didn't end up fighting for Pole.
On the other hand the improved teams, Jaguar, Benetton and Prost had one car doing well while the other was average and this points to the driver more than the car. With Irvine, Fisichella and Alesi all having good results here in the past.

In the battle of the team-mates, the closest 2 were Raikkonen ahead of Heidfeld by just 0.18 seconds. Villeneuve was ahead of Panis by 0.208 seconds while Michael Schumacher was only 0.225 seconds ahead of Barrichello.
The worst performance was from Luciano Burti who was struggling all weekend. He was a massive 2.526 seconds behind his team-mate Jean Alesi. Pedro de la Rosa was 1.601 seconds behind Eddie Irvine while Tarso Marques was 1.413 seconds behind Fernando Alonso. Jenson Button was 1.122 seconds behind Fisichella.

The start tomorrow will be crucial as will be the pits stop strategy. Overtaking is next to impossible and unless a driver makes a mistake or his car fails him, a driver will only be able to gain position through a good start or via the pits.
