GP - Qualifying session David Coulthard grabs pole position ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and an impressive Eddie Irvine make the top 6. 60 min: Michael Schumacher touched the barrier at Le Portier on the inside and stopped on the track. 60 min: Mika Hakkinen doesn't improve. 60 min: Coulthard takes provisional pole with a time of 1:17.430. Hakkinen on his final flying lap. 60 min: Coulthard fast on the first sector and the second sector. 60 min: Final minute and Coulthard and Hakkinen both on the track. Schumacher doesn't improve but remains in 1st at this stage. 59 min: Villeneuve improves one place to 9th. Luciano Burti joins the action. 10 min: Jacques Villeneuve starts his first flying lap. 9 min: Jacques Villeneuve goes out on the track while Bernoldi sets a 1:23.623 and takes second place. 8 min: Bernoldi starts his first flying lap. 7 min: Jos Verstappen pits as he covers 3 laps out of the allowed 12. Enrique Bernoldi is on the track. 6 min: Jos Verstappen is a lot slower than his best time this morning when he set a 1:21.827 5 min: Verstappen's first flying lap is a 1:23.537 3 min: Interesting to see a car out already!. It is Jos Verstappen. Lets hope that he doesn't have another massive engine blow-out like the one we saw this morning. 1 min: The track temperature has now reached 41 degrees. This will make it interesting in the battle between Bridgestone and Michelin. Qualifying here is crucial of all the races on the calendar as overtaking is nearly impossible so a good grid position is very important. Due to the narrow track, traffic can easily spoil a flying lap and drivers have to rely on perfect timing and a lot of luck to have that flying lap. Session starting in 2 minutes. The top 6 drivers from this morning practice have already gone faster than the Pole time of last year. Hakkinen was just under 1.2 second faster than the Pole time of last year. Now the drivers will give it all because this is the session were it all counts. Session starting in 5 minutes. This qualifying session is set to be a thriller with both Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen setting very fast times.
