Race Report - Results

David Coulthard wins the Monaco Grand Prix. His first of the season and his second at Monaco. Michael Schumacher was second ahead of his brother Ralf Schumacher. Jarno Trulli scored his first points of the season for Renault finishing in 4th. Giancarlo Fisichella finishes in 5th for the second race in a row and Heinz Harald Frentzen scores another point for Arrows.
Rubens Barrichello only manages 7th after having a bad start then running into Kimi Raikkonen damaging his front wing and receiving a stop-go penalty for his actions. He also received a drive through penalty as a result of speeding in the pit lane.
Juan Pablo Montoya fails to finish his first race of the season after retiring with mechanical problems while running second.

David Coulthard sustained the pressure from the start of the race all the way until the end and managed to win the race. At the start he took first place from Juan Pablo Montoya and remained in the lead throughout the race. For most of the race his gap to second was around a second. Half way through the race puffs of smoke came out of his car but luckily the problem went away.
Michael Schumacher kept the pressure on Juan Pablo Montoya until Montoya retired. Michael pitted for his stop relatively early and tried to gain on David Coulthard, it wasn't enough though and when Coulthard went in for his pit stop he rejoined in the lead just over a second ahead of Michael and it remained that way.
Ralf Schumacher was close to the front pack in the early stages of the race but it appears that the Williams was struggling with the Michelin tyres and he started to drop back. Later in the race he had to make an unscheduled stop as one of his tyres was damaged. He had a big gap to Jarno Trulli in 4th place so he managed to pit and rejoin in 3rd place.
Jarno Trulli made a good start and made up a place. He gained 2 more places through attrition but towards the end of the race he was struggling and Giancarlo Fisichella got very close to him.
Both Fisichella and Frentzen drove solid races and managed to get into the points by a solid performance and attrition of the cars ahead.
Rubens Barrichello finished 7th ahead of Nick Heidfeld, Eddie Irvine, Pedro de la Rosa, Mark Webber and Enrique Bernoldi.
Mark Webber deserves a mention as he was the only rookie not to smash his car into a barrier and managed to finish in 11th place.

As expected, several drivers hit the barriers during the race. The rookies started it but some of the more experienced followed!. Allan McNish, Takuma Sato, Alex Yoong, Felipe Massa and Mika Salo all crashed into barriers. Kimi Raikkonen retired yet again, this time as a result of an over ambitious Rubens Barrichello. Jenson Button trying to pass Olivier Panis collided with him while Jacques Villeneuve after stalling in the grid and starting a lap down retired with mechanical problems.

So for the 8th year in a row, the Pole setter fails to win the Monaco Grand Prix.
Michael Schumacher remains the only driver to finish every race so far this season (and not less that 3rd place!).
On the other side, Olivier Panis is the only driver yet to finish a race this season while Kimi Raikkonen had his 6th retirement in a row and Takuma Sato his 4th.

In the Drivers championship, Michael Schumacher remains at the top with 60 points and a massive 33 points ahead of both Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya, both with 27 points. David Coulthard is 4th with 20 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello with 12 and Jenson Button with 8.

In the Constructors championship, Ferrari increase their lead over Williams by 2 points 72 to 54 while McLaren remain a distant third with 24 points ahead of Renault with 11 points and Sauber with 8 points.
