Championship Qualifying Session Report - ResultsJuan Pablo Montoya grabs his third pole of the season
and the second in a row ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens
Barrichello. Ralf Schumacher was 4th ahead of Kimi Raikkonen with
Giancarlo Fisichella managing an impressive 6th place. As expected, the fight was between Juan Pablo Montoya and Michael Schumacher. Their team-mates didn't really fare in this fight and in the end Juan Pablo only needed two runs to grab pole after setting a stunning time of 1:12.836 (just under 3 seconds faster than the Pole time of last year!). With rain forecast towards the end of the session, the cars
came out relatively early. The 2 Williams were in fact the first cars out on
the track. Ralf Schumacher was the first to set a time but Montoya immediately
went faster. Michael Schumacher was the last to go out for his first run and
went fastest on his first run. Moments later Juan Pablo went out and bettered
Michael's time by nearly half a second. Montoya aborted his 2 subsequent runs! With Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher in 3rd and 4th, the fight was for the 3rd row and Kimi Raikkonen managed to grab 5th place (his 6th for the season) but it was Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordan who impressed the most setting the 6th fastest time. A number of drivers had problems during the session. Takuma Sato suffered an engine blowout, Jarno Trulli hit the wall and both Jacques Villeneuve and Alex Yoong stopped on the track with mechanical problems. The top 2 are separated by just 0.182 seconds while Rubens
Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher are less than a second behind. A number of drivers had disappointing results and even failed to set times that matched their times in practice, those were Felipe Massa (12th), Heinz Harald Frentzen (19th) and Alex Yoong (22nd). In the battle of the team-mates, Mark Webber yet again
manages to have the biggest gap with a massive 1.839 seconds to his team-mate
Alex Yoong. Giancarlo Fisichella out-qualified his team-mate Takuma Sato by
0.808 seconds and Nick Heidfeld out-qualified his team-mate Felipe Massa by
0.684 seconds. Giancarlo Fisichella (6th) and Jacques Villeneuve (9th) had
their best qualifying positions this season with Juan Pablo Montoya (1st) and
Kimi Raikkonen (5th) equalled their best. Click
