Race Report - ResultsMichael Schumacher
clinches his 4th World Title and his 51st Career Win Leading from start to finish -
bar a couple of laps during his pit stops - Michael Schumacher has
won the Hungarian GP and secured his 4th World Drivers' Championship
Title. With Rubens Barrichello finishing second, Ferrari have also secured
the Constructors' Championship Title. As expected the race had very few overtaking manoeuvres on the track. Track positions were mainly gained through the pits or by retiring driving in front. 5 of the top top 6 starting the race finished inside the top 6 with only Trulli retiring and making way for Heidfeld to finish in the points who started from 7th. The race started with both Ferrari's having good starts with Coulthard having a bad start and dropping behind Barrichello. Behind them Ralf Schumacher was ahead of Jarno Trulli and Mika Hakkinen. Eddie Irvine was the first casualty of the race sticking his car in the gravel on the first corner. The nature of the track makes it almost impossible to overtake and the race is mainly decided in pit stop strategy. Jean Alesi however managed to overtake Pedro de la Rosa for 12th place early in the race. The top 3 built a gap to Ralf Schumacher in 4th place while Jarno Trulli in 5th was holding a number of cars behind him. The gap between the top 3 was static at around 2 seconds until lap 11. Then Michael Schumacher starts pushing (or Rubens Barrichello slowing) and by the first round of pit stops Michael was over 13 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Coulthard was right behind Barrichello. At the first round of pit stops, Coulthard managed to get ahead of Barrichello and for a few laps appears to be closing the gap to Michael. A few laps later though the gap stabilises and Rubens Barrichello starts catching Coulthard. Behind them Ralf Schumacher was on his own in 4th place however Mika Hakkinen managed to pass Trulli through the pits and started to put in some fast laps and managed to close in on Ralf. Behind Hakkinen, the Sauber duo were fighting for position ahead of Montoya. At the second round of pit
stops, Barrichello managed to take second place back from Coulthard as the
latter had a small problem with refuelling during his pit stop. Michael
remained in the lead and with Barrichello behind him in second place, it
was the perfect result for Ferrari to win both Titles. The race ends with Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Ralf Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen and Nick Heidfeld make the top 6. Frentzen in his first drive for Prost spun off and retired while Alesi in his first race for Jordan managed to finish in 10th place. While Michael Schumacher has now secured his 4th World Title, the fight for second heats up with David Coulthard now with 51 points, Rubens Barrichello with 46 and Ralf Schumacher with 44. Also Ferrari may have won the Constructors' Title but the fight for second between McLaren with 72 and Williams with 59 will heat up as we head into the last 4 races of the season, all of which are fast tracks that suit the Williams power.
