Michael Schumacher wins the Hungarian GP
and secures his 4th Drivers' Title. Ferrari also win the Constructors'
Title. Lap 77: Final lap. Michael leads Barrichello and is on his way to his 4th World Title and his 51st win! Lap 76: 2 laps to go! Lap 75: Panis returns back to the pits. Obviously his problem is terminal! Lap 74: Michael leads Barrichello by 6.1 seconds. Michael is just dictating the pace. Barrichello won't challenge Michael and Coulthard knows that he has no chance of passing either of them. Coulthard now wants to get points to strengthen his second place in the championship. Lap 73: Michael leads Barrichello by 6.5 seconds. Coulthard is 0.6 seconds behind Barrichello. Panis is actually back in the race, 15 laps down - clearly for testing purposes! Lap 72: Hakkinen pits for a 3rd time. He rejoins in 5th! Lap 71: Fisichella retires! - 12 cars remaining in the race. Lap 70: Marques retires! Lap 69: Marques has been lapped 4 times, Verstappen 3 times and Fisichella and de la Rosa have been lapped twice. Lap 68: Hakkinen still 0.4 seconds behind Ralf Lap 67: Michael to Barrichello 7.0 seconds. Lap 66: Frentzen is off and retires. He was in 13th place. Lap 65: 12 laps to go and both championship could be decided if the top 2 remain in their positions. Barrichello is now clearly slower than Michael. Lap 12: Michael Schumacher sets the fastest lap of the race so far with a 1:18.697. He is now pulling away from Barrichello and Coulthard. Lap 11: Jean Alesi passes Pedro de la Rosa for 12th place. Lap 11: Order - M Schumacher, Barrichello, Coulthard, R Schumacher, Trulli, Hakkinen, Heidfeld, Montoya, Raikkonen and Panis. Retirements: Irvine and Burti. Lap 10: Luciano Burti goes off into the gravel. His race is over. Lap 10: Michael Schumacher is unable to build a gap to Barrichello and Coulthard. The gap is almost static with around 2 seconds separating the 3 cars. Lap 9: Mika Hakkinen in 6th is very close to Trulli in 5th but this circuit is very hard to overtake on. The gap is 0.287 seconds. Lap 8: Coulthard sets another fastest lap with a 1:18.975. Lap 7: Jean Alesi in the Jordan is in 13th place having lost a place at the start while Frentzen is in 20th losing 4 places! Lap 6: The top 3 continue to pull away. The gap between Michael in first and his brother in 4th is now 6.9 seconds. Lap 5: Jenson Button gets a 10 second stop-go penalty. He is currently in 16th place. A bad weekend for Button. Lap 4: Coulthard sets the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:19.616. He is in 3rd place 2 seconds behind Michael Schumacher. Lap 3: Order - M Schumacher, Barrichello, Coulthard, R Schumacher, Trulli, Hakkinen, Heidfeld, Montoya, Raikkonen and Panis. Lap 2: Michael Schumacher leads Barrichello by 1.3 seconds. Bad start from Coulthard as he lost 1 place. Cars are forming on the grid for the start. Formation lap underway. Everyone gets away! The Ferrari crew are working on Michael's car on the grid possibly as a result of his small off on his way to the grid. Formation lap in 2 minutes All the cars are now on the grid. Michael Schumacher had a small off on his way to the grid. He has taken his place at the front of the grid. Formation lap in 5 minutes Ferrari can also clinch the Constructors' Title today if they finish first and second. Depending on where McLaren finishes they could also clinch it with a less than perfect result. Formation lap in 10 minutes Last year Mika Hakkinen won the race after starting from third on the grid. He made a brilliant start and led from the first corner and never looked back. The top 6 on the grid last year all finished in the top 6. Formation lap in 15 minutes David Coulthard has to finish in front of Michael Schumacher if he wants to keep his very slim title chances alive. He starts from second on the grid and was fastest this morning in the Warm-up. Coulthard also needs to maximise his points so that Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher don't get too close to his second place in the championship. Coulthard and the 2 Williams are already on the grid. Michael Schumacher dominated Qualifying yesterday and if he continues his domination and wins the race he will be the 2001 World Champion. If he wins, he will also equal Alain Prost's record number of wins. The pit lane has opened and the cars have 15 minutes to form on the grid. Formation lap starting at 2:00 PM local time.
