First Friday Practice Session Report - ResultsThe Ferrari duo of Michael Schumacher
and Rubens Barrichello dominated the session despite only covering
a few flying laps each. Michael Schumacher has clearly signalled that he
wants to wrap up the title fight here by winning the race. Not only was he
the only driver to set a time under the 1:17 mark but he has already
beaten last year's Pole time by over half a second. Rubens Barrichello was
in second place not too far behind and also under the Pole time of last
year. Mika Hakkinen managed 3rd place over half a second off the pace. The Honda runners (except Alesi) were 7th(Trulli), 8th (Panis) and 9th (Villeneuve) with Kimi Raikkonen making the top 10. There were no major incidents during the session however Jean Alesi driving in the Jordan for the first time spun after only a few laps in the car while Coulthard damaged his car causing debris on the track and forcing the session to be stopped for 3 minutes. Kimi Raikkonen and Luciano Burti covered the most number of laps with 21 each followed by Bernoldi and Marques with 20 laps each. Jean Alesi covered the least number of laps with 5 while Coulthard and de la Rosa only managed 9. All other drivers covered between 10 and 19 laps. It certainly looks like Ferrari have an advantage at this stage although McLaren are not far behind. Behind those 2 there is Williams, Sauber, Jordan and BAR. It will be an interesting weekend. The session was run under sunny conditions with the air temperature reaching 29 degrees.
