Championship Race Report - ResultsRubens Barrichello wins his second race of the season
ahead of Michael Schumacher and securing the 2002 Constructors' Championship
for Ferrari. Ralf Schumacher was 3rd ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, David Coulthard
and Giancarlo Fisichella. The race started with Rubens Barrichello retaining the lead ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher. Juan Pablo Montoya had a bad start and dropped back to 7th while Giancarlo Fisichella moved into 4th with Felipe Massa in 5th ahead Jenson Button who had a great start moving into 6th. As expected, the 2 Ferraris started building a gap to the rest of the field and by the 10th lap they were 9 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher. 15 laps into the race and it was Rubens Barrichello leading Michael Schumacher with Ralf Schumacher in 3rd ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Felipe Massa. Jacques Villeneuve became the first retirement of the race on lap 20 with a transmission failure. On lap 22, the only overtaking manoeuvre of the race occurred when Kimi Raikkonen took advantage of a lockup by Juan Pablo Montoya. Raikkonen managed to squeeze past Montoya who went off and damaged his car in the process. Montoya pits and rejoins in 17th place. After the first round of pits stops, Rubens Barrichello retained the lead ahead of Michael Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher was 3rd and 22 seconds behind the lead while Giancarlo Fisichella was 4th ahead of Felipe Massa. Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard moved up into 5th and 6th after Jenson Button spun out of the race and Trulli was passed through the pits. The order at the front remains the same while the 2 McLarens catch Felipe Massa who was close behind Giancarlo Fisichella. After the second round of pit stops, Rubens Barrichello kept the lead from Michael Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher was 3rd and 22 seconds behind the lead while Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard managed to get ahead of both Giancarlo Fisichella and Felipe Massa via the pit stops. There was no further change in the order until the end of the race. Final order - Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher,
Ralf Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella. Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap of the race with a 1:16.207 which is a new lap record. The attrition rate was unusually low for this race with only 4 cars out of the 20 that started failing to make it to the finish. Jacques Villeneuve had his 3rd retirement in a row. Eddie Irvine had his 6th retirement in a row while Anthony Davidson spun out of his first Formula 1 race. So Ferrari have now won the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships and Rubens Barrichello is now in seconds place in the Drivers Championship 5 points ahead of both Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya.
