Warm-up Session Report - ResultsRalf Schumacher set the fastest time of the session just 0.07 seconds ahead of David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen was third with Michael Schumacher, Jos Verstappen and Juan Pablo Montoya making the top 6. It was one of the closest warm-up sessions in recent memory with a mere 0.308 seconds separating the top 8. It looks like we'll have a close race. The session was interrupted by a Red Flag
in the 6th minute as a result of Montoya's car blowing an engine and
spilling oil on the oval section of the track making the track very
dangerous to drive. After about 15 minutes, the session was restarted.
David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen both had off's with Coulthard returning
the pits and Hakkinen out of the session. Rubens Barrichello stuck his car
in the gravel trap early in the session and had to use the spare car while
Panis suffered a launch control problem while practicing a start and had
to continue the session in the spare. A number of drivers in the top 10 appear to be running lighter fuel loads when they set their times indicating a different pit stop strategy. Jos Verstappen set the 5th fastest time despite qualifying in 20th yesterday while Pedro de la Rosa managed 7th fastest while qualifying in 16th. Jacques Villeneuve continued his nightmare weekend only managing 19th fastest and over 2 seconds off the pace. Jenson Button and Juan Pablo Montoya covered the most number of laps with 19 while Giancarlo Fisichella only managed 8 laps and David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello only covered 13 laps. All other drivers covered between 14 and 18 laps. Expect a close fight between Ferrari, McLaren and Williams with tyres and reliability playing an important role during the race. Race starts at 1:00 PM local time. Go to the Live Update page for live coverage during the Race.
