Warm-up Session Report - Results

Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time of the session ahead of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Michael Schumacher, Olivier Panis and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6.

It was a usual warm-up session with drivers performing their final checks before the race. The McLaren pair topped the timesheets for most of the session and traded fastest laps however Barrichello topped the timesheets in the final few minutes.
The Spanish GP has been typically a 2 stop race due to the high tyre wear but Bridgestone have indicated that the hard compound could survive a single stop so we could see a few drivers choosing a single stop and hence their slower lap times. Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve are notable slower than their team-mates compared to their qualifying time. This could indicate that they are on a different strategy for the race.

No major incidents occurred during the session although at the end of the session, David Coulthard suffered from what appeared to be an engine problem and was forced to stop on the track with the McLaren mechanics quickly getting to his car and covering it!.

Jos Verstappen covered the most number of laps with 18 followed by Kimi Raikkonen with 17. Jenson Button continues to have problems with his car covering only 5 laps.  Other drivers covered between 11 and 16 laps.

With different strategies, different tyre manufacturers and all the new electronics, the race should be exciting and full of surprises.
