Race results - Michael Schumacher wins the race ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve. Jarno Trulli, David Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld make the top 6. Hard luck for Hakkinen as his car fails on the final lap. Lap 65: Hakkinen suffers an engine failure on the last lap. Michael Schumacher wins! Lap 63: 2 laps to go and Michael clearly struggling is now just over a half a minute from Montoya. Lap 62: Mika Hakkinen laps everyone expect Michael Schumacher. Lap 61: Michael Schumacher is now under a minute ahead of Montoya so he is fairly safe. Lap 60: Coulthard takes 6th place from Heidfeld. Lap 59: Coulthard right behind Heidfeld. Schumacher is now 20 seconds behind Hakkinen. Lap 58: Race order - Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 17 seconds. Juan Pablo Montoya, Jacques Villeneuve, Jarno Trulli and Nick Heidfeld make the top 6. Lap 56: Barrichello has confirmed a suspension problem while Schumacher is now 15 seconds behind Hakkinen. Lap 56: Jacques Villeneuve is chasing Montoya, he can smell a podium finish which he hasn't seen since '98 Lap 55: Michael Schumacher is not chasing and might be trying to avoid the problem that happened to Barrichello. Lap 54: The only real battle is now between Heidfeld and Coulthard for 6th place. Lap 53: Mika Hakkinen is increasing his gap over Michael Schumacher to 6.3 seconds. Montoya in 3rd is over a minute behind. Lap 52: The top 5 drivers are on the same lap. Nick Heidfeld in 6th is being chased by David Coulthard. Lap 51: Mika Hakkinen is leading by 5 seconds. Michael Schumacher is not responding at this stage. Lap 51: Race order - Mika Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya. Jacques Villeneuve, Jarno Trulli and Nick Heidfeld make the top 6. Lap 50: Hakkinen pits and rejoins in the lead! Barrichello retires. Lap 49: Eddie Irvine retires and Hakkinen ready to come in. He is 24.6 seconds ahead of Michael. Lap 49: Rubens Barrichello looks like having a flat tyre as he went off the track. He pits. Hakkinen sets another fastest lap. Lap 48: Hakkinen increases the gap to 23.5 seconds. It could be very close after he stops. Lap 47: Wrong, Hakkinen just did the fastest lap of the race!, a 1:21.514. Lap 46: Irvine and Coulthard pit. Hakkinen is not increasing the gap over Michael. Lap 45: Irvine, Panis and Coulthard have yet to stop. Lap 44: Rubens Barrichello pits from 3rd and gets away cleanly. Lap 43: Hakkinen in the lead until he pits. He was 4.7 seconds behind Michael. Lap 42: Michael Schumacher in the pits. Lap 41: Jacques Villeneuve makes his second stop and so does Montoya. Montoya retains the lead over Villeneuve Lap 40: Jarno Trulli pits, he was in 6th place and so does Nick Heidfeld. Lap 39: Kimi Raikkonen pits and rejoins in 10th. Lap 38: The gap between Michael and Mika is now 3.8 seconds. Lap 37: Jos Verstappen goes off into the gravel but recovers. Lap 36: Montoya, Villeneuve, Trulli and Heidfeld are fairly close with around 3 seconds separating each. Lap 35: Race order - Michael Schumacher leads Mika Hakkinen by 3.7 seconds. Rubens Barrichello, Juan Pablo Montoya, Jacques Villeneuve and Jarno Trulli make the top 6. Heidfeld, Irvine, Raikkonen, Panis, Coulthard, Alesi, Verstappen, Burti, Alonso, Fisichella, Button and Marques make the rest of the field. Lap 34: Ralf Schumacher cannot explain his spin! Lap 33: Jarno Trulli is catching Jacques Villeneuve. He is 1.4 seconds behind. Lap 32: The gap between Michael and Mika has dropped to 2.8 seconds! Lap 31: The gap between Michael and Mika is back up to 3 seconds. Lap 30: Mika Hakkinen is closing the gap again. It is down to 2.3 seconds. Barrichello is 11.7 seconds behind and Montoya is 37.7 seconds behind the leader. Lap 30: David Coulthard is back in 11th place after his stop. Lap 29: David Coulthard finally pits from 8th place. Lap 28: Race order after first round of pit stops - Michael Schumacher leads Mika Hakkinen by 3 seconds. Rubens Barrichello, Juan Pablo Montoya, Jacques Villeneuve and Jarno Trulli make the top 6. Heidfeld, Coulthard (yet to stop), Irvine, Raikkonen, Panis, Alesi, Verstappen, Burti, Alonso, Fisichella, Marques and Button make the rest of the field. Lap 27: Mika Hakkinen rejoins in second place. Lap 27: Mika Hakkinen pits. Lap 26: Michael Schumacher responds by setting the fastest lap of the race. He is 23.6 seconds behind Hakkinen. Lap 25: Panis pits and stalls, his mechanics restart and he gets away. Lap 25: Barrichello pits so he is on a similar strategy. Mika Hakkinen has yet to pit. Lap 24: Mika Hakkinen is pushing hard, he sets the fastest lap of the race. Interesting to see when Barrichello will pit and if he is on a different strategy ? Lap 23: Mika is in the lead but has yet to stop. Villeneuve pits. Lap 22: Michael Schumacher in the pits. He must be on a 2 stop strategy. Lap 21: Montoya and Trulli pit together! Montoya beats Trulli in the pits and gains a place. Lap 21: Juan Pablo Montoya has caught Jarno Trulli, he is only 0.8 seconds behind. Ralf Schumacher is off in the gravel. Race over for him! Lap 20: Race order - Michael Schumacher leads Mika Hakkinen by 1.9 seconds. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Juan Pablo Montoya make the top 6. Villeneuve, Heidfeld, Irvine, Panis, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Alesi, Burti, Coulthard, Fisichella, Button, Alonso, Marques. Lap 19: Jenson Button pits - another 3 stopper ? Lap 18: Mika Hakkinen is getting closer to Michael as they start lapping the back markers. Lap 17: Coulthard passes Fisichella while Michael Schumacher catches Tarso Marques. Lap 16: Coulthard passes Button and Alonso pits! - 3 stops perhaps ? Lap 15: The gaps to the leader are: Michael Schumacher - Hakkinen (1.8 seconds) - Barrichello (6.5 seconds) - Ralf Schumacher (14.3 seconds) - Jarno Trulli (18.9 seconds) - Juan Montoya (20.7 seconds) Lap 14: David Coulthard has passed Tarso Marques and is now in 18th place. Michael Schumacher responds back with another fastest lap of 1:22.224. Lap 13: Mika Hakkinen responds and reduces the gap back to 1.7 seconds to Michael. Lap 13: Fernando Alonso (16) in the Minardi is pushing Giancarlo Fisichella (15) hard. He is only 0.4 seconds behind. Lap 12: Michael Schumacher sets the fastest lap and increases the gap to 2.2 seconds from Hakkinen. Lap 11: Race order - Michael Schumacher leads Mika Hakkinen by 1.9 seconds. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Juan Pablo Montoya make the top 6. Villeneuve, Heidfeld, Irvine, Panis, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Alesi, Burti, Fisichella, Alonso, Button, Marques and Coulthard make the rest of the field. Lap 9: Enrique Bernoldi retires with a problem. David Coulthard is still last in 19th place. Retirements: de la Rosa, Frentzen and Bernoldi. Lap 9: Mika Hakkinen is maintaining the gap to Michael Schumacher in front. It has been fairly static at around 2 seconds. They are pulling away from Barrichello. Lap 8: David Coulthard is just over a minute behind the lead but has now caught up with Bernoldi who he touched at the start. Lap 7: Race order - Michael Schumacher leads Mika Hakkinen by 1.9 seconds. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Juan Pablo Montoya make the top 6. Lap 6: Heinz Harald Frentzen and Pedro de la Rosa touch, they are both out! Lap 4: Michael Schumacher leads Mika Hakkinen by 1.6 seconds and are pulling away from Rubens Barrichello. Lap 2: Montoya made a superb start jumping from 12th to 6th while Frentzen had trouble at the start and is back in 17th. Coulthard is last at the moment. Lap 2: Race order - Michael Schumacher leads Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Juan Pablo Montoya make the top 6. Race start: David Coulthard starting at the back makes contact with Bernoldi and has to pit to change the front nose. Race start: Heinz Harald Frentzen appeared to have stalled but managed to get going. He has lost a few places. Race start: Michael Schumacher leads ahead of Mika Hakkinen with Barrichello 3rd ahead of Ralf Schumacher. The cars are back on the grid with Coulthard in last place. David Coulthard has a problem and will start from the back of the grid! The safety car is making its way to the back of the grid. The grid is being cleared for the formation lap. Formation lap in 2 minutes. The weather conditions are tricky. It is windy and it could rain and the teams will have to rely heavily on their weather forecasts to set-up their cars. Formation lap in 4 minutes. During the morning warm-up Rubens Barrichello was fastest ahead of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Michael Schumacher was 4th. While warm-up times can be misleading this could mean that Michael Schumacher is on a single stop while Barrichello and possibly the 2 McLarens are on a 2 stop strategy. We don't have to wait long for an answer! Formation lap in 8 minutes. Pedro de la Rosa returns to Formula 1 racing with the Jaguar team after a 4 race absence. He took over from Luciano Burti who moved to the Prost team. Gaston Mazzacane is out. Formation lap in 12 minutes. The pit exit is now closed and all the drivers have left the pits and are on the grid. Formation lap in 15 minutes. Several drivers have indicated that they won't be using their launch control systems as they are not fully developed yet. The launch control systems cannot do a perfect start but will guarantee a good start. Formation lap in 15 minutes. The pit exit is open and the cars usually do a couple of shakedown laps before finally forming on their grid position. The weather is overcast with the possibility of rain. Temperature is 16 degrees.
