Warm-up Session Report - ResultsOlivier Panis was the
surprise of the session setting the fastest time just 0.028 seconds ahead
of David Coulthard. Ricardo Zonta was another surprise setting the 3rd
fastest time just 0.033 seconds off the pace. Eddie Irvine, Mika Hakkinen
and Michael Schumacher made the top 6. The fast pace of Panis, Zonta and Irvine points to a different race strategy compared with Coulthard, Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. They might be trying a lighter fuel load in their first stint of the race to make up a few positions as this race provides a number of overtaking opportunities. They could also be looking at a 2 stop strategy. The gaps between the cars were pretty close indicating a close race between the top 10 or so car. Less than 0.4 seconds separates the top 7 cars and 1.5 seconds separates the top 15. There were no major incidents
during the session although Mika Hakkinen almost hit the wall early in the
session and Ralf Schumacher recovered from a spin. Jean Alesi covered the most number of laps with 20 followed by Jos Verstappen with 19 and Jacques Villeneuve with 18. Jenson Button only managed 7 laps while Luciano Burti only covered 9 and Ralf Schumacher did 10. All the other drivers covered between 12 and 17 laps. While Michael Schumacher was 6th fastest in the warm-up, he is still the man to beat and if his car performs in the race as in qualifying, it will be very difficult for those behind him to catch him. The race starts at 1:00 PM local time. (5:00 PM GMT)
