Only Coulthard manages to improve. So Michael
Schumacher takes pole comfortably ahead of his brother Ralf Schumacher
and David Coulthard. Jarno Trulli, Rubens Barrichello and Olivier Panis
make the top 6. 60 min: Coulthard makes it to 3rd place with a time of 1:16.423. 60 min: The cars start their flying laps as the chequered flag is waved. 59 min: Session restarted and a queue of cars exits the pits! 59 min: Just over a minute to go in the session. Several drivers have used all their laps including Marques, Burti, Bernoldi, Irvine and de la Rosa. 59 min: Top 10 - M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Trulli, Coulthard, Barrichello, Panis, Raikkonen, Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Montoya. 59 min: Heidfeld crashes at the same corner where Barrichello crashed going into the main straight. 59 min: Heidfeld crashes on the last minute and session is stopped again! 58 min: Ricardo Zonta remains in 12th. 57 min: Irvine's final lap got him up to 15th behind his team-mate de la Rosa who is in 14th. 56 min: Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Bernoldi and Zonta are also on their final runs. 55 min: Irvine starts his final run. He is in 16th place! 54 min: One run remaining for all the drivers except Michael Schumacher who has 2 runs and Tarso Marques who has no more runs remaining. 53 min: Mika Hakkinen improves but remains in 8th place over a second off the pace! 52 min: Barrichello takes 5th from Panis with a 1:16.760. 51 min: Barrichello starts his flying lap for his 3rd run. 50 min: Top 10 - M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Trulli, Coulthard, Panis, Barrichello, Raikkonen, Hakkinen, Villeneuve and Montoya. 50 min: Panis fails to improve on his 3rd run. Hakkinen returns to the track for his 3rd run. 49 min: Jarno Trulli improves in 3rd with a time of 1:16.459. Barrichello back on track. 48 min: Villeneuve improves his time and moves back into the top 10 in 9th place. 48 min: Michael Schumacher goes sub 1:16 with a 1:15.782. It doesn't look like anyone will catch him! 47 min: Montoya moves into 9th while Villeneuve goes out on his 3rd run. 46 min: David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher are on the track. 45 min: Mika Hakkinen clocks a 1:17.241, over a second off the pace. 44 min: Eddie Irvine improves but remains in 16th place. Hakkinen is off the pace as well. 43 min: Mika Hakkinen starts his second run after damaging his car on his first run. 42 min: Eddie Irvine is the first out after the session is restarted. He is on his 3rd run. 41 min: Session restarted after Barrichello's car is cleared. 40 min: Top 10 - M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Trulli, Coulthard, Panis, Barrichello, Raikkonen, Hakkinen, Heidfeld and Villeneuve. 40 min: He is running back to the pits as the track marshals remove his car from the dangerous spot. Zonta goes into 12th. 36 min: David Coulthard doesn't improve and neither does Trulli. 35 min: Kimi Raikkonen improves to 6th! 34 min: Jarno Trulli in 2nd goes out on his 2nd run. 33 min: David Coulthard goes out on his second run while Verstappen improves to 11th. 32 min: It is interesting to see both Trulli and Panis up there in the top 5. Irvine is not doing very well in 14th at this stage. 31 min: Mika Hakkinen damaged his car on his first run going over the curbs. Montoya starts his flying lap. 18 min: Montoya, Verstappen and Button all go out on the track. 16 min: Villeneuve clocks a 1:18.039 and takes first. That is slightly slower than his best time in practice. 15 min: Fisichella clocks a 1:19.885 for 1st. That is a bit slower than his best time this morning. 15 min: Villeneuve starts his flying lap. 14 min: Fisichella starts his flying lap. 13 min: Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve are both out on the track. 12 min: The battle for pole is expected to be between Michael Schumacher and the 2 McLaren's. It was expected that Williams could be a threat but they didn't pose a threat to the top 2 in the practice sessions. 10 min: Only the 2 Minardis have done 1 run so far. 9 min: Marques goes 2nd with a time of 1:22.286! 8 min: Tarso Marques starts his flying lap. 7 min: Tarso Marques in the second Minardi is out for his first run. 6 min: He sets a time of 1:20.882 for his first attempt and 4 laps done already for him! 5 min: Alonso continues on his third lap! 4 min: Fernando Alonso spins but recovers. His run is ruined. 3 min: Alonso starts his flying lap. 2 min: Fernando Alonso is already on the track from his first run. Session underway and it is quiet at the moment. As the weather is unlikely to change, the first 10 minutes of qualifying will be pretty quiet as each driver is only allowed 12 laps during qualifying and each driver usually waits as late as possible so other drivers will lay the rubber on the track and which helps in reducing lap times. Qualifying starts in 2 minutes Ricardo Zonta makes his first appearance for Jordan after Heinz Harald Frentzen didn't feel 100% following his crash during Friday practice. Zonta has raced here before with the BAR team. Qualifying starts in 5 minutes Michael Schumacher's lap time from the 2nd practice session today was 2.239 seconds faster than the pole time of last year.
