GP - 2nd Friday Practice Session Mika
Hakkinen sets the fastest time of the day with a stunning time of
1:17.672. His time is 0.414 seconds ahead of his team-mate David
Coulthard. Eddie Irvine was the surprise of the session setting the 3rd
fastest time while Barrichello, Montoya and Ralf Schumacher make the top
6. 60 min: No improvements at the top. 59 min: Frentzen crashes but he is OK! 59 min: Final minute and Michael Schumacher seems to have a wrong setup or something as he is back in 10th place. 58 min: Heinz Harald Frentzen spins but recovers. 57 min: Jean Alesi looking good as he sets the 11th fastest time. 56 min: Top 10 - Hakkinen, Coulthard, Irvine, Barrichello, Montoya, R Schumacher, Heidfeld, Trulli, Frentzen, and M Schumacher. 55 min: Ralf Schumacher improves but stays in 6th place. 54 min: Mika Hakkinen improves again and is the first driver to drop under the 1:18 mark! 53 min: Montoya now moves into 5th place with a time of 1:18.639. 52 min: Juan Pablo Montoya is slowly learning the track. He has now moved into 5th place. 51 min: Kimi Raikkonen moves into 11th place. He is not matching his team-mate here as they are usually very close. Heidfeld is up in 7th at this stage. 50 min: Of the top 10, only Heidfeld, Frentzen and Montoya are on the track. 50 min: 10 minutes to go and the McLaren duo are not facing much competition at this stage. Michael Schumacher has not improved on his time since the morning and is back in 9th place now. 49 min: Fernando Alonso continues to impress in the Minardi. He is now in 20th place ahead of Jenson Button in the Benetton. Both over 4 seconds off the pace though! 48 min: Pedro de la Rosa is not really shaping compared to Eddie Irvine. He is in 12th place over a second behind. 47 min: Jarno Trulli retakes 6th place from Heidfeld. His time is identical to that of Ralf Schumacher! 46 min: At this stage McLaren seem to have a slight edge over Ferrari and Jaguar could be the surprise of the weekend. 45 min: Michael Schumacher has covered 5 laps so far this session but has yet to improve his time from the morning. 44 min: Having said that, Ralf Schumacher just jumped into 5th place with a time of 1:18.990, 0.750 seconds off the pace. 43 min: The Jaguar of Eddie Irvine is right up there with the McLarens and the Ferraris while Williams appear to be struggling still in 9th and 10th and over a second off the pace. 42 min: Top 10 - Hakkinen, Coulthard, Irvine, Barrichello, Heidfeld, Frentzen, Trulli, M Schumacher, Montoya and R Schumacher. 41 min: Michael Schumacher is on the track now after losing more than half of the session while his team carried out some adjustments or repairs. 40 min: Mika Hakkinen takes 1st from Coulthard with a time of 1:18.240. It is all happening now! 39 min: David Coulthard smashes the pole time of last year and takes the top spot with a time of 1:18.330. 38 min: Eddie Irvine goes fastest. That is amazing! His time is 1:18.508. 37 min: Jenson Button is in 20th place 4.3 seconds off the pace while his team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella is in 16th and under 3 seconds off the pace. 36 min: Olivier Panis improves on his time but remains in 12th. He is 1.388 seconds of the pace. 35 min: Olivier Panis goes out as well. BAR are having a terrible day so far. Panis in 12th and Villeneuve in 18th and will not be running this session after his crash. 34 min: Rubens Barrichello is back on the track. He is currently in 1st place. 33 min: Luciano Burti improves his time but is way back in 19th place. His team-mate Alesi is up in 14th 32 min: Very little activity at the moment. Only Trulli, Fisichella and Burti are on the track. 31 min: Top 10 - Barrichello, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Irvine, Heidfeld, Frentzen, Trulli, M Schumacher, Montoya and R Schumacher. 30 min: Eddie Irvine in 4th place with a time of 1:18.804. Interesting! 29 min: The gap to the lead has narrowed a bit with 1 second covering the top 9 cars. 28 min: Heinz Harald Frentzen takes 5th from his team-mate. The Jordan's are looking good this weekend. 27 min: Michael Schumacher has only completed 1 lap this session so far. 26 min: Montoya moves ahead of his team-mate to take 8th place with a time of 1:19.307. 25 min: Mika Hakkinen takes 2nd from Coulthard with a time of 1:18.650. Coulthard returns to the track. 24 min: Tarso Marques is finally back on the track setting a time of 1:25.415 and remains in 22nd place. 24 min: Mika Hakkinen on a fast lap! 23 min: Montoya moves back into 10th place with a time of 1:19.672. His team-mate Ralf is in 7th place. 22 min: Top 10 - Barrichello, Coulthard, Heidfeld, Trulli, M Schumacher, Frentzen, R Schumacher, Hakkinen, Raikkonen and Irvine. 21 min: Nick Heidfeld jumps to 3rd place with a time of 1:19.044! 20 min: Kimi Raikkonen takes 8th place from Irvine. 19 min: Jacques Villeneuve is not expected to return to the track today after badly damaging his car in the morning. 18 min: Tarso Marques has not yet set a lap time this session. He is still having problems in the pits. 17 min: Eddie Irvine is up in 8th place with a time of 1:19.790!, his team-mate de la Rosa is in 13th place. 16 min: Rubens Barrichello goes fastest with a time of 1:18.570. Pole time of 2000 (1:18.439) could be smashed today! 15 min: Jarno Trulli jumps into 2nd place with a time of 1:19.101. 14 min: Ralf Schumacher improves again with a time of 1:19.568 and moves into 5th place. 13 min: Only 5 cars on the track at the moment! 12 min: Ralf Schumacher improves again to 6th place just over a second off the pace. Rubens Barrichello is on the track. 11 min: Top 10 - Coulthard, Barrichello, M Schumacher, Frentzen, Hakkinen, Heidfeld, Panis, R Schumacher, Montoya and Trulli. 10 min: Fernando Alonso finally sets a competitive time but remains in 21st place. 9 min: Jos Verstappen is now in 16th place having lost all of the first practice session. He is already ahead of his team-mate Bernoldi. 8 min: Coulthard improves by 0.002 seconds! while Montoya moves into 8th still over 1.5 seconds off the pace. 7 min: Heinz Harald Frentzen moves into 4th place and Nick Heidfeld into 6th. The track is getting faster. 6 min: David Coulthard doesn't improve but is lapping very close to his best time set this morning. 5 min: Mika Hakkinen on a flying lap nearly touches the barrier and loses a bit of time failing to improve. 4 min: Jean Alesi is the first to improve. He remains in 13th place. 3 min: Ralf Schumacher returns to the pits while David Coulthard exits the pits. No improvements in the lap times yet. 2 min: Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli are also on the track. 1 min: Mika Hakkinen, Kimi Raikkonen and Jos Verstappen are on the track. Session underway and the Williams pair of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya are the first to go out on the track. They were 9th and 10th this morning while the expectation is that they will be challenging Ferrari and McLaren. They could be having tyre problems here. Session
