GP - 1st Saturday Practice Session
Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time of the session ahead of David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Irvine make the top 6. Heidfeld, de la Rosa, Raikkonen and Panis make the top 10. 45 min: David Coulthard squeezes between Hakkinen and Michael with a time of 1:16.875. Nothing between the 3! 45 min: Mika Hakkinen responds by improving his time with a 1:16.828. Villeneuve will not set a time as the session is over. 44 min: Michael Schumacher improves but remains in 2nd just 0.005 seconds behind Mika! 43 min: Most cars are now going out for their final run before the end of the session. 42 min: Rubens Barrichello takes 3rd from Coulthard with a time of 1:17.441. 41 min: Tarso Marques who only managed 6 laps yesterday has covered 13 laps. He is last (as usual!) 4.5 seconds off the pace. 40 min: Top 10 - Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello, R Schumacher, Irvine, Heidfeld, de la Rosa, Panis and Trulli. 39 min: Michael Schumacher has completed the most number of laps so far with 13. Villeneuve has yet to complete a flying lap. 6 minutes to go. 38 min: And Mika Hakkinen does it taking 1st with a time of 1:16.908. Irvine jumps to 6th with a time of 1:18.019 37 min: Michael Schumacher improves in 1st with a time of 1:17.049. We are very close to breaking the 1:17 mark! 36 min: Irvine moves into 18th with a relatively slow lap time of 1:20.307. 35 min: Mika Hakkinen takes 3rd from Barrichello with a time of 1:17.715. Trulli slow and in problems! 34 min: Eddie Irvine is finally on the track with just over 10 minutes to go. His team-mate de la Rosa is in 7th. 33 min: Jarno Trulli enters the top 10 for the first time this session in 9th place with a time of 1:18.575. He is 1.3 seconds off the pace. 32 min: Coulthard improves but remains in second with a time of 1:17.625. 31 min: Mika Hakkinen also goes back out on the track. Ricardo Zonta has covered the most laps with 12. He is in 15th place. 30 min: Panis goes straight into 8th place while Barrichello improves to 3rd. 29 min: Coulthard goes back out on the track to try and retake 1st place from Michael Schumacher. 28 min: Top 10 - M Schumacher, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Barrichello, R Schumacher, Heidfeld, de la Rosa, Raikkonen, Alesi and Bernoldi. 27 min: Panis goes out on the track for his first flying lap and so does Alonso. Irvine and Villeneuve are yet to go out! 26 min: Michael Schumacher goes fastest with a time of 1:17.296. that is 0.4 seconds faster than Coulthard's best time. 25 min: Just 20 minutes to go and 4 cars have yet to set lap times. This must be a nightmare start to the weekend for Villeneuve who has so far only completed 13 laps from yesterday. 24 min: Kimi Raikkonen improves to 7th with a time of 1:18.723. Montoya's session appears to be over as he sits on the pit wall waiting for his car to be fixed. 23 min: Ralf Schumacher moves into 4th ahead of de la Rosa with a time of 1:18.279. The Jordan's are not doing well so far with Trulli in 13th and Zonta (Frentzen's replacement) in 14th. 22 min: Top 10 - Coulthard, Hakkinen, Barrichello, de la Rosa, M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Alesi, Montoya, Fisichella and Verstappen. 21 min: Only 3 cars on the track at this stage. 4 cars have yet to set lap times, both BAR's, Irvine and Alonso! 20 min: Hakkinen pushing too hard spins but recovers. At the moment on the 2 McLarens are under the 1:18 mark but Barrichello is close behind. 19 min: Coulthard retakes top spot with a 1:17.710 while Barrichello is now in 3rd and de la Rosa in 4th. 18 min: Villeneuve has yet to complete a flying lap today. He has lost a lot of time yesterday. 18 min: Pedro de la Rosa straight into 4th place. The Jaguar is looking good here! 17 min: And Hakkinen betters it with a time of 1:17.938. A McLaren 1-2 at this stage. Montoya with mechanical trouble as he is slow around the track. 17 min: David Coulthard shoots straight to the top of the timesheets with a time of 1:18.210 on his first flying lap! 16 min: Top 10 - M Schumacher, R Schumacher, Alesi, Montoya, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Zonta, Burti, Fisichella and Bernoldi. 15 min: More drives go out on the track including Barrichello and Mika Hakkinen. Meanwhile Ralf Schumacher goes 2nd with a time of 1:19.008. 14 min: Jean Alesi moves into 2nd with a time of 1:19.528 followed by Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya. 13 min: Kimi Raikkonen is now second with a time of 1:20.168 while Zonta improves to 1:20.703. 12 min: Michael Schumacher goes fastest with a time of 1:18.383. 11 min: Ricardo Zonta sets a time of 1:21.450 on his first lap at the track this weekend. Pretty good. 10 min: The Williams pair join in the activities on the track. 9 min: Michael Schumacher is also on the track already. He was not very fast yesterday. 8 min: Ricardo Zonta is on the track and so is Kimi Raikkonen. 7 min: Bernoldi clocks a 1:21.416 which is close to his fastest time on Friday 6 min: Enrique Bernoldi is the first to go out on his first flying lap. 5 min: And finally Panis goes out on his installation lap. 4 min: Barrichello goes out on the track for his installation lap. He is alone on the track. 3 min: The cars are now streaming back into the pits. 2 min: Only Olivier Panis and Rubens Barrichello have yet to go out on their installation lap. Session underway and most drivers go out on their installation lap including Ricardo Zonta who has raced here before for BAR. He is replacing Frentzen. Jordan have announced that Ricardo Zonta will replace Heinz Harald Frentzen at the Canadian GP following Frentzen's crash on Friday - Session starting in 2 minutes Eddie Irvine was a surprise 3rd on Friday. The true test will be today to see if the Jaguar's new aerodynamic package has improved the car that much. Jacques Villeneuve on the other hand had a disastrous day crashing during the 1st session and missing out on the 2nd. Villeneuve was very angry at Montoya claiming that the Colombian was on a mission to block others! - Session starting in 5 minutes Michael Schumacher only managed 11th fastest on Friday after losing a lot of time during the 2nd practice session while his mechanics where making adjustments to his car. He doesn't believe that his time is a reflection of his pace and is not too worried about it - Session starting in 10 minutes Last year the lap times dropped over a second between Friday and Saturday, if the same trend continues this year, we'll be looking at a low 1:16 for the practice sessions and possibly even a high 1:15's for qualifying. The cars are getting too fast! (Hakkinen set the fastest time on Friday with a time of 1:17.672 which is already faster than the pole time of last year!) - Session starting in 15 minutes Session
