Warm-up Session Report - Results

Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time of the session just ahead of David Coulthard and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Rubens Barrichello is 4th while Michael Schumacher is 5th over 1.1 seconds off the pace. Trulli, Raikkonen, Villeneuve, de la Rosa and Heidfeld make the top 10.

The session was run under sunny conditions with an average temperature of 13 degrees. There were no major incidents during the session although Michael Schumacher's car stopped while he was attempting a start from the pit lane while Jacques Villeneuve suffered from what appeared to be an engine failure and had to run back for the spare.

The gap between the top 3 and the rest is very big with over half a second between 1st and 4th. This could indicate that the 2 McLaren's and Frentzen are planning to run a shorter first stint with a lighter fuel load to be able to overtake and catch-up with the leaders. This could also indicate that they are planning a 2 stop strategy.

The Williams are way back in terms of position but they are not really that far behind in terms of lap times. Ralf and Juan Pablo are under a second slower than the time set by Michael. Michelin appear to struggle on dirty tracks that lack grip.

Jarno Trulli and Luciano Burti covered the most number of laps with 18. Jenson Button covered the least number with 9 while Giancarlo Fisichella only managed 10 and Fernando Alonso managed 11. Most other drivers covered between 12 and 17 laps.

It will be an interesting race with different strategies and possibly some overtaking.
