Second Friday Practice Session Report - ResultsDavid Coulthard manages to set the fastest time of the session on his last flying lap of the session just 0.027 seconds ahead of his team-mate Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello is third ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Michael Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld. Frentzen made a superb recovery after losing out in the morning by posting the 7th fastest time ahead of the second Sauber of Kimi Raikkonen. Olivier Panis and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 10. Most of the team-mates are very close to each other at this track just like in Barcelona even though the tracks are significantly different. The exception is Montoya who is over 0.7 seconds behind his team-mate Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli who is over 0.5 seconds behind his team-mate Heinz Harald Frentzen. Several drivers had spins but they all recovered except for Panis who spun in the gravel and appeared to have stalled the engine. Jenson Button had an engine failure after only completing 3 laps into the session. The top 3 are less than a second off the
Pole time of last year and there are still 2 sessions to go before qualifying!.
The top 8 are separated by less than a second. While the top 18 are
separated by just over 2 seconds. The best Minardi is 3 seconds off the
pace while the best Benetton is 3.5 seconds off the pace! Jarno Trulli and Rubens Barrichello covered the most number of laps with 29 followed by Pedro de la Rosa with 28 and Juan Pablo Montoya with 27. Jenson Button only managed 3 laps while Fernando Alonso covered 18 and Jean Alesi 19 laps. Most other drivers covered between 20 and 26 laps. The time difference between most of the teams is not very big. This will provide us with a very interesting qualifying session tomorrow.
