Race Report - ResultsDavid Coulthard wins the Austrian GP ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Kimi Raikkonen was 4th ahead of Olivier Panis and Jos Verstappen. It was a thrilling race from start to finish with a number of incidents and several overtaking manoeuvres. In the end it was David Coulthard who started from 7th place who won the race. The race started with Juan Pablo Montoya taking the lead from his team-mate Ralf Schumacher. Michael Schumacher who started from pole dropped to third ahead of his team-mate Rubens Barrichello. Behind them a number of cars stalled on the grid thanks to their launch control systems!. Trulli, Heidfeld, Hakkinen and Frentzen were all victims of the start. The safety car had to come out so that the track marshals move the cars that were stuck on the grid. Once the safety car came in, Montoya started to increase the gap to Ralf who in turn was building a gap to Michael. That was not for long as Ralf Schumacher encountered a problem and dropped back, he then went into the pits and retired with brake related problems. Michael Schumacher started to close in on Montoya and he was soon all over the back of Montoya's car. Jos Verstappen who was on a 2 stop strategy was charging up the field and managed pass a number of cars and catch Rubens Barrichello in 4th place. Michael Schumacher attempts to pass Juan Pablo Montoya on the outside but Montoya doesn't give in and locks his brakes going straight into the gravel, Michael Schumacher has to stop and Barrichello, Verstappen, Coulthard, Raikkonen and Panis go through. With Barrichello in the lead and Coulthard chasing him, Michael Schumacher starts moving up the field and gets by Panis and Raikkonen. Jos Verstappen on a 2 stop strategy pits early so the order becomes Barrichello ahead of Coulthard and Michael Schumacher. Just before the first round of pit stops, Juan Pablo Montoya who was running in 5th place and catching Kimi Raikkonen retires. Of the top 3 runners, Michael Schumacher in
3rd pits while Rubens Barrichello who was ahead of Coulthard appeared to
slow down in an attempt to give Michael the opportunity to get ahead of
both himself and Coulthard via the pits. On the following lap, Barrichello
pits but Michael Schumacher goes off on his out-lap and loses some time.
He ends up behind Barrichello. The order remains the same with Barrichello pushing Coulthard until the end with no luck in closing the gap and attempting a pass. On the final corner before the finish line, Barrichello is told by his team to let Michael Schumacher through, something which Barrichello appeared to be very upset about. So David Coulthard wins his second race of the season and maintains his record of finishing every race this season in the points. Michael Schumacher is second with Barrichello 3rd. Kimi Raikkonen finished 4th which is his best result in his short career while Oliver Panis scores another 2 points for the BAR team. Jos Verstappen scores a point for the Arrows team after taking a gamble on a two stop strategy. In the Drivers' Championship, Michael
Schumacher now leads David Coulthard by 4 points (42 - 38) with Rubens
Barrichello in 3rd with 18 points. Mika Hakkinen who failed to score any points is now 38 points behind the leader in the championship and with 11 races to go, any chances of him making a comeback this season are next to nothing. The next round is the Monaco GP on the 27th of May.
