First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Despite suffering from a bad flu, Mika Hakkinen put in a stunning display by setting the fastest time of the session just under 0.3 seconds ahead of his team-mate David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello was 3rd ahead of and impressive Kimi Raikkonen. Ralf and Michael Schumacher make up the top 6.

In addition to Hakkinen's stunning time, the Arrows look strong here with Enrique Bernoldi in 7th and Jos Verstappen in 9th. It appears that this circuit suites their chassis. Both drivers were clocking the fastest top speeds of all cars.

A number of drivers spun during the session but they all escaped any damage and recovered. Heinz Harald Frentzen had a hydraulic problem with his car and only managed a few laps.

Looking at the lap times in detail, the top 5 are separated by under a second while the top 13 are separated by under 2 seconds. The top 13 drivers have set times that were fastest than the times set on the 1st practice session on Friday last year.

Luciano Burti covered the most number of laps with 26 followed by Jacques Villeneuve with 24 and Olivier Panis with 23. Heinz Harald Frentzen covered the least number of laps as he had problems with his car only managing 5 laps. Michael Schumacher only did 8 laps and Tarso Marques did 13 laps. Most other driver covered between 15 and 22 laps.

It will be interesting to see how much further the lap time will drop in the second session. The Pole time for last year was a 1:10.410.
