GP - 1st Saturday Practice Session
Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time of the session ahead of a much improved Juan Pablo Montoya and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard, Heinz Harald Frentzen, Olivier Panis, Jacques Villeneuve, Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld make the top 10. Session over: Michael Schumacher goes fastest on his final lap of the session with a time of 1:10.094. 45 min: Juan Pablo Montoya takes first with a stunning time of 1:10.391. Michael Schumacher still on a fast lap. 45 min: Olivier Panis is in 6th with a time of 1:11.687. 44 min: Mika Hakkinen gets very close to the pole time of last year as he goes first with a time of 1:10.548 43 min: Michael Schumacher goes fastest with a time of 1:10.670. Mika Hakkinen regains 2nd with a time of 1:10.762. 42 min: Coulthard improves but remains in 4th. 41 min: The top 9 are separated by 1 second. 40 min: Olivier Panis improves to 8th pushing Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve behind him. 39 min: David Coulthard moves into 4th with a time of 1:11.305. Hakkinen moves back into 2nd. 15 min: Michael Schumacher goes fastest with a time of 1:12.894. Coulthard and Panis join the action. 14 min: Jacques Villeneuve sets s very slow time of 1:24.941 as Hakkinen improves again to 1:13.365. 13 min: Mika Hakkinen improves to 1:13.681 as Luciano Burti joins the field. 12 min: Jacques Villeneuve goes out on the track and so is Michael Schumacher. 11 min: Mika Hakkinen clocks a time of 1:14.297. The track must be very dirty. 10 min: Mika Hakkinen goes out on the track. 9 min: Alonso improves to 1:16.008 but that is 1.5 seconds slower than his best time yesterday. 8 min: Only Alonso has set a time so far! 6 min: Alonso sets a time of 1:16.917. This is pretty slow. 5 min: Fernando Alonso is the first man to gout on a flying lap. 4 min: No one is on the track at this stage as Barrichello returns to the pits. 3 min: Rubens Barrichello goes out on his installation lap. 2 min: The drivers return back to the pits. Only Rubens Barrichello has not gone out. 1 min: Session underway and a number of cars are out on their installation lap. Benetton had their worst ever performance yesterday after finishing 21st and 22nd even behind Minardi! Session starting in 2 minutes. Both Coulthard and Hakkinen have already bettered the times set here during Saturday practice last year. It is very likely that we'll see the pole time of last beaten during practice today. Session starting in 5 minutes. McLaren dominated the 2 sessions yesterday although Ferrari closed the gap slightly. Michael Schumacher had a problem with the brakes and hence his limited amount of lap in the first session. Session starting in 10 minutes. Session starting at 9:00 AM local time.
