Qualifying Session Report - Results

Juan Pablo Montoya grabbed his first ever Pole position in his Formula 1 career just 0.019 seconds ahead of his team-mate Ralf Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen was third and 0.694 off the pace.
Michael Schumacher for only the second time this season failed to qualify on the front row and only managed 4th while David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello make the top 6.

The Sauber pair of Heidfeld and Raikkonen took 7th and 8th while Pedro de la Rosa in the Jaguar took 9th ahead of Jarno Trulli in the Jordan.

David Coulthard was the first of the top teams to grab provisional pole but once Ralf Schumacher set a time, it was clear that it will be a battle between the two team-mates. Montoya's first run was slightly slower than Ralf's but his second run was quicker and that was enough for him to secure pole. Ralf tried on his 3rd and 4th runs without success. Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen fought for 3rd place but Hakkinen was reasonably comfortable ahead of Michael while David Coulthard didn't put the performance of a title contender accepting 5th place just under 1.5 seconds off the pace!.

A few drivers suffered from problems with Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button have engine failures while Luciano Burti spun and went into the gravel.

All the drivers completed 4 runs except for Montoya, Coulthard and Trulli who did 3 runs each.

One second separates the top 4, two seconds separates the top 8, 3 seconds separates the top 14 and only Tarso Marques is over 4 seconds off the pace. He still managed to qualify though!

In the battle of the team-mates, Ralf Schumacher was just 0.019 seconds behind Juan Pablo Montoya, Eddie Irvine was only 0.106 seconds behind Pedro de la Rosa and Jenson Button was pretty close to Giancarlo Fisichella just 0,139 seconds behind.
On the other hand Ricardo Zonta was 0.852 seconds behind Jarno Trulli, Tarso Marques was 0.803 seconds behind Fernando Alonso, David Coulthard was 0.763 seconds behind Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello was 0.741 seconds behind Michael Schumacher.

The closest group of cars is between Nick Heidfeld in 7th and Jean Alesi in 14th with just 0.8 seconds separating them.

In addition to Juan Pablo Montoya, Pedro de la Rosa had his best qualifying performance so far this year in 9th.
Jarno Trulli had his worst qualifying performance so far this season in 10th and so did Jos Verstappen in 20th. Several drivers have equalled their worst qualifying performance including Michael Schumacher (4th), Jacques Villeneuve (12th), Olivier Panis (13th) and Tarso Marques (22nd).

It looks like we'll have a 4 groups, Williams alone at the front, Ferrari and McLaren fighting together, Sauber, Jaguar, Jordan, BAR and Prost together while Benetton, Arrows and Minardi fight at the back.

It will be interesting to see how many cars the Williams BMW will lap (if they last!)
