Second Friday Practice Session Report - ResultsTwo Michelin runners set the fastest times on the first day of practice for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Surprisingly Eddie Irvine in the Jaguar was fastest ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya in the Williams. The two were half a second ahead of 3rd placed man Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren while Rubens Barrichello was not too far behind him in 4th. Michael Schumacher over 0.8 seconds off the pace in 5th place just ahead of Pedro de la Rosa and David Coulthard. Jean Alesi was another surprise in 8th ahead of Jarno Trulli in 9th and Ralf Schumacher in 10th who only did 2 laps before he spun out early in the second session. It appears that this track definitely suits
the Michelin runners better especially with the high temperatures
experienced today as track temperatures reached 40 degrees. For the first
time this season we have 5 Michelin runners in the top 10. Ralf Schumacher while on a flying lap made a mistake and spun off. A number of other drivers had minor offs but managed to recover. Rubens Barrichello slowed down on the track towards the end of the session but managed to get back to the pits. Jos Verstappen, Giancarlo Fisichella and Nick Heidfeld covered the most number of laps this session with 22 each while Ralf Schumacher only managed 2 and Enrique Bernoldi only covered 8 laps and Kimi Raikkonen only did 9. All other drivers covered between 13 and 21 laps. Overall for today, Juan Pablo Montoya covered 43 laps (that is almost a whole race distance!) while Luciano Burti and Pedro de la Rosa managed 39 laps each. Ralf Schumacher covered the least number of laps with 18 while Rubens Barrichello and Jos Verstappen only managed 22 laps each. With the weather expected to remain sunny and warm for the next 2 days, it is likely that we'll have an interesting qualifying and race!
