Championship Race Report - ResultsMichael Schumacher wins his 9th race of the season
ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello, David
Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld make the top 6. The race started with Michael Schumacher retaining his position in the lead followed by Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. Juan Pablo Montoya starting from 4th lost a place to Kimi Raikkonen while Jarno Trulli managed to move up into 6th from 8th. Michael Schumacher starts to build a gap to Ralf Schumacher and by the 10th lap he was over 4 seconds ahead. Rubens Barrichello was close behind Ralf while Montoya was losing time behind Raikkonen and raced wheel to wheel with him for a few corners until he managed to get by. Behind the top 5, nearly the rest of the field were very close and we saw a lot of overtaking between them. By lap 15, Michael Schumacher couldn't increase the gap to
Ralf and it was stable at 4.5 seconds. Michael Schumacher starts building the gap again to Ralf
while Barrichello in 3rd appeared to be losing some time. Montoya in 4th was
19 seconds behind the lead while the rest of the field were a long way behind. The second round of pit stops was around lap 48 and
Barrichello was the first to pit and this time it was his turn to have a
refuelling problem and the stop took over 21 seconds. Michael Schumacher then
pitted with Ralf Schumacher and Montoya pitting on the following two laps. The race looked settled by that stage with Michael
Schumacher leading Ralf Schumacher by 9 seconds while Montoya was 22 seconds
behind the lead and Rubens Barrichello 29 seconds behind. Only 9 cars managed to cross the finish line, 5 of them a
lap down. Eddie Irvine continued his streak of non finishes with 5 in a row while Jarno Trulli has 3 in a row. Mika Salo broke his non finishing streak of 5 by finishing in 9th! So Michael Schumacher now has 106 points in the Drivers
Championship (he has clinched the title already) ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya
with 40 and Ralf Schumacher with 36. Rubens Barrichello has 35 points while
David Coulthard has 32. It is still close for second. Click here of the Drivers' Championship table for this season Next stop: The Hungarian GP on the 18th of August.
