Championship Race Report - ResultsRalf Schumacher wins his first race ever ahead of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello. Mika Hakkinen, Jarno Trulli and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. This was a well deserved win for Ralf Schumacher and Williams as Ralf led the race from start to finish. David Coulthard finished second and is now on equal points with Michael Schumacher while Rubens Barrichello manages to finish third thanks to a brilliant strategy where he overtook Hakkinen via the pits. Both Jordan's finished in the points proving more reliable than in the past. Ralf Schumacher took the lead from the start after having a superb start from third and managed to pass both Hakkinen and Coulthard. Jarno Trulli also had a great start staring from 5th and passing Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. The race order after the first lap was: Ralf Schumacher ahead of David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher, Montoya and Panis. Michael Schumacher on lap 4 had a gearbox
selection problem and lost 3 places dropping to 7th but that was not the
end of his problems. At the front Ralf Schumacher was gradually
increasing the gap to Coulthard while Trulli was clearly holding up
Hakkinen, Montoya, Barrichello and Michael Schumacher. The top runners all pit however Barrichello stays out for a few laps, this allows him to get in front of Mika Hakkinen. Race order after the first pit stops: Ralf Schumacher ahead of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello. Hakkinen, Montoya and Trulli. The order remains static until the next round of pit stops, meanwhile a number cars retire including Villeneuve who was in the top 10. The seconds round of pits stops goes without incident for the top runners except for Montoya who pits and his refuelling hose is stuck onto his car. He then stalls and his pits ends up over a minute. He only goes out for a lap and returns to the pits suffering from a clutch problem. Ralf Schumacher then controls the pace from the front taking it easy while Coulthard appears to be catching him. Ralf finishes the race 4.352 seconds ahead of Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello was third ahead of Jarno Trulli and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Only 12 cars manage to finish the race. So Williams have finally delivered on their potential. This was the first win for Williams since their championship winning year in 1997. The first win by Michelin in only their 4th race. (Since their return back to Formula 1) and the first win for BMW in only their second year in Formula 1 (since their return). So David Coulthard is now on equal points
with Michael Schumacher on 26, Rubens Barrichello is 3rd with 14 and Ralf Schumacher
is 4th with 12 points. In the Constructors Championship, Ferrari leads with 40 points ahead of McLaren with 30. Williams reclaimed 3rd spot with 14 points ahead of Jordan with 10 and Sauber with 8. This year's championship will not have Ferrari and Williams run away with the majority of the points. Williams have already stopped that!
