Championship First Friday Practice Session Report - ResultsRubens Barrichello sets the fastest time of the session and almost 1.5 seconds ahead of his team-mate Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard, Jarno Trulli and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. The session was mainly run on a wet track
after heavy rains overnight and Michael Schumacher was the first to set a
timed lap under these conditions and his times were very good compared to
the rest of the field including Barrichello. It was only in the last
minute that Barrichello managed to set a time much quicker than Michael
and that was mainly due to the drying track. Jos Verstappen failed to put in a timed lap
as his car stopped during his installation lap at the start of the
session. Both Jarno Trulli and Enrique Bernoldi covered the most number of laps with 24. A number of drivers did 20 laps. Jos Verstappen failed to cover any lap while Fernando Alonso only managed 7 laps and was almost 19 seconds off the pace. Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard only did 12 laps while Jacques Villeneuve did 13. Most other drivers did between 17 and 20 laps. The Michelin tyres appear to be behind Bridgestone under these conditions with Irvine the fastest of the Michelin runners in 9th. The Michelin runners occupy the places from 14th til 21st. The second session should give us a better idea of how the teams will shape under dry conditions as the track should be mostly dry by then.
