Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

The McLaren duo of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard continued their dominant form this session setting stunning lap times in the mid 1:16's. Ralf Schumacher improved significantly over the first session thanks to a rise in the temperature making the Michelin tyres work better. Despite that he was a massive 0.947 seconds behind Mika Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher was 4th over a second off the pace while Rubens Barrichello was 5th 1.257 seconds behind.
Juan Pablo Montoya managed to get close to his team-mate setting the 6th fastest time while Jarno Trulli was 7th ahead of Nick Heidfeld and Jean Alesi in the improving Prost made it in 9th place ahead of Olivier Panis to round up the top 10. Kimi Raikkonen, Jacques Villeneuve and Pedro de la Rosa made 11th to 13th but they are worth mentioning as just 0.063 seconds separates Panis in 10th and de la Rosa in 13th.

Several drivers went off the track and while most recovered, Frentzen was stuck in the gravel and so was Villeneuve. Irvine, Marques, Panis and Michael Schumacher all had offs but recovered.
Luciano Burti had a car failure and was stopped on the track while Rubens Barrichello limped back to the pits after his car slowed down dramatically.

Michael Schumacher trying all he can to reduce the gap to McLaren covered the most number of laps this session with 33 followed by Olivier Panis with 27 and Fernando Alonso with 26. Frentzen only managed 4 laps before he went off while Luciano Burti covered 6 laps before his car failed. Verstappen only did 15 laps while most of the other drivers covered between 18 and 24 laps.

For both sessions, Panis covered the most laps with 50 ahead of Michael Schumacher with 49 and both Jean Alesi and Pedro de la Rosa with 47 each. Frentzen covered the least number of laps with 17.

This is certainly a worry for Ferrari as not only does McLaren appear to have the upper hand here but given the warmer conditions expected over the next 2 days, Williams could move ahead of Ferrari and closer to McLaren.

But this is only practice and will never know for sure the true pace of these cars until qualifying, however having to make up a whole second is going to be tough for both Ferrari and Williams.
