GP - 2nd Friday Practice Session Session over with Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher. M Schumacher, Barrichello, Montoya, Trulli, Heidfeld, Alesi and Panis make the top 10. 60 min: He fails to improve. Heidfeld jumps into 8th. 60 min: Hakkinen is on his final lap and it appears very quick! 59 min: Tarso Marques finally improves his time, still in 22nd but within the 107% qualifying rule 58 min: Jacques Villeneuve goes off into the gravel. Session over for him. He is currently in 10th place. 57 min: No improvements for the top 4 as it appears that they are running with heavy fuel loads and worn tyres. 56 min: Giancarlo Fisichella and Jos Verstappen move into 14th and 15th. 54 min: Tarso Marques is in his usual place over 5.5 seconds off the pace and currently outside the 107% qualifying rule. 53 min: All the top 10 drivers are on the track except for Panis. Pedro de la Rosa improves to 11th 52 min: Top 10 - Hakkinen, Coulthard, R Schumacher, M Schumacher, Barrichello, Montoya, Trulli, Alesi, Panis and Villeneuve. 51 min: Michael Schumacher is trying hard to improve his time trying different settings. He has covered 40 laps so far in both sessions while Hakkinen covered 33 and Coulthard 30. 50 min: Juan Pablo Montoya goes out on the track in an attempt to improve. 49 min: Only Ralf Schumacher is within a second of the McLaren's. The 2 Ferrari's and Montoya are within 1.5 seconds while Trulli and Alesi are the only other drivers within 2 seconds of the McLarens! 48 min: Eddie Irvine improves to 14th but is 3.371 off the pace. 46 min: This is the first time that a Prost is in front of both Saubers. Both teams use the same '00 spec Ferrari engine. 45 min: Ralf Schumacher and the 2 Ferraris go back out. They are around a second off the pace. 44 min: Several cars are on the track but there are no improvements. 43 min: Rubens Barrichello moves into 5th ahead of Montoya. 42 min: Olivier Panis moves into 9th ahead of his team-mate. 41 min: The McLarens are still in a class of their own with almost a second separating them from Ralf Schumacher in 3rd place. 40 min: Top 10 - Hakkinen, Coulthard, R Schumacher, M Schumacher, Montoya, Barrichello, Trulli, Alesi, Villeneuve and Raikkonen. 39 min: Jean Alesi moves into 8th. Another sign that the Michelin tyres are getting better. 38 min: But Hakkinen retakes the lead with a time of 1:16.408. The speed of the McLaren's here is amazing! 37 min: Coulthard retakes the lead with a time of 1:16.579. Just 0.027 seconds ahead of Hakkinen. 36 min: Ralf Schumacher jumps into 3rd ahead of his brother. The Williams are starting to crawl their way to the top! 35 min: Pedro de la Rosa puts his Jaguar in 10th place! 34 min: Montoya takes 4th from Barrichello. He sets a time of 1:17.737. That is a big improvement. 33 min: Rubens Barrichello improves his time but remains in 4th place 1.168 seconds behind Hakkinen. 32 min: Pedro de la Rosa improves to 12th place. That is 2.592 seconds behind the leader! 31 min: Top 10 - Hakkinen, Coulthard, M Schumacher, Barrichello, Trulli, Villeneuve, R Schumacher, Montoya, Raikkonen and Panis. 30 min: Ralf Schumacher improves in 7th while Montoya moves to 8th just 0.011 seconds behind his team-mate. 29 min: Michael Schumacher improves in 3rd but overall he is 0.9 seconds behind Hakkinen! 28 min: Panis improves to 8th while Bernoldi leaps ahead of the 2 Jaguars into 15th. 27 min: Villeneuve takes 6th from Ralf Schumacher. He is still 1.828 seconds off the pace. 26 min: Panis moves into 9th as both Coulthard and Michael Schumacher rejoin the action. 25 min: Jacques Villeneuve is now in 7th place with a time of 1:18.610. It appears that BAR, Jordan, Sauber and Williams are very close at this stage. 24 min: Mika Hakkinen retakes the top spot from his team-mate with a stunning time of 1:16.606! 23 min: Eddie Irvine takes 15th spot from his team-mate with a time of 1:20.176. 22 min: Eddie Irvine's first lap is slow clocking a 1:32.916!. His team-mate Pedro de la Rosa is in 15th place with a best time of 1:20.209. 21 min: Top 10 - Coulthard, Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Barrichello, Trulli, R Schumacher, Heidfeld, Montoya, Raikkonen and Panis. 20 min: Ralf Schumacher takes 6th away from Heidfeld with a time of 1:18.559. He is 1.671 seconds behind Coulthard. 19 min: Nick Heidfeld improves to 6th as Irvine starts his first flying lap of the day. 18 min: Meanwhile Rubens Barrichello appears to have some kind of problem as he crawls back to the pits at a very slow pace. 18 min: Michael Schumacher returns to the track. He hasn't improved his time so far this session and remains 0.879 seconds behind Coulthard. 17 min: Panis goes off but manages to recover. 16 min: Eddie Irvine finally appears on the track. 15 min: Juan Pablo Montoya jumps into 6th place with a time of 1:19.035. He is still over 2 seconds behind Coulthard! 14 min: Tarso Marques finally sets a time of 1:22.639 and is 21st. Irvine has yet to set a timed lap. 13 min: Meanwhile Alesi is running strong in 11th as the Prost seems to be suited to this track so far! 12 min: Luciano Burti moves up to 14th but following that his car fails him and he stops on the track. Session over for him. 11 min: Raikkonen, Panis and Villeneuve are on the track, they are separated by less than 0.1 seconds in 6th, 7th and 8th! 10 min: Jenson Button has improved into 18th ahead of Bernoldi and Alonso. Marques is on his first timed lap while Irvine have yet to set a time. 9 min: Frentzen is off into the gravel trap and is stuck there. Session over for him. He is currently in 13th place. Not a good start. 8 min: Mika Hakkinen improves in 2nd now just 0.111 seconds behind Coulthard. 7 min: Top 10 - Coulthard, Hakkinen, M Schumacher, Barrichello, Trulli, Raikkonen, Panis, Villeneuve, R Schumacher and Heidfeld. 6 min: Fernando Alonso improves to 19th and is now ahead of Jenson Button. 5 min: Michael Schumacher runs through the gravel but recovers. 4 min: Ralf Schumacher improves to 9th place with a time of 1:19.193. 3 min: Now most of the cars are on the track but no improvements yet. 2 min: More drivers follow including Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli. 1 min: Tarso Marques goes out as well as Fernando Alonso. Marques failed to set a time in the first session. Session underway and the temperature has gone up to 14 degrees. Still cold but any increase in temperature shoe benefit the Michelin running teams. Both David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen have already set lap times that are under the Pole time of last year!. It will be interesting to see how much more the lap times with drop!.
