Session Report - Results
The four fastest drivers were below last years pole times, set by
Hakkinen, of 1:30.556.
Verstappen in the Arrows set one of the early fastest laps in the
session only to see it overtaken by driver after driver. The pace
increased relentlessly and it is only the first practice. What will
qualifying times be on Sunday?
Rubens Barrichello had the fastest lap in the last minutes of the
session 1:29.056 more than a second faster than last year's qualifying
time. Michael Schumacher was second fastest (1:29.368) with Hakkinen
leading the two McLarens 1:30.037 and Coulthard on 1:30.052.
Ralf Schumacher was next with team-mate Montoya having to be satisfied
with 8th fastest.
Luciano Burti covered the most number of
laps with 21 ahead of Ralph Schumacher with 20 ahead of Olivier Panis with
19. Enrique Bernoldi, Jean Alesi and Jacques Villeneuve only managed a
handful of laps after having mechanical problems with their cars.
