number of readers have sent in their reviews and comments about the race
and we have decided to publish some. Yaman from India writes: Considering
it was the first race, the action was very good. All the drivers and so
too the cars were very well prepared. Disaster struck though when a marshal
was killed seemingly after being hit by flying debris from the cars of
Ralph Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve after they were involved in a
horrendous crash early in the race. The incident was very unfortunate and
after the news reached the drivers, there were no jubilant celebrations i.e.
spraying of champagne, fist pumping etc. The mood at the Post-race press
conference was very sombre and the top three finishers expressed deep
regret at the loss. 1. There is no doubt about the fact that even with the new FIA regulations to make the cars safer have failed. The cars are very fast, and (which has been shown throughout testing) they were around two seconds faster than last year on this very track. The fastest lap this year was a lot faster than pole position time last year round. 2.
It was clearly seen that Ferrari had the speed early on in the race with
both Schumacher and Barrichello setting a very fast pace. Unfortunately
Hakkinen was unable to finish the race as his bad luck at Australia
continued for the third time in a row, but David Coulthard showed that McLaren
can pick up the pace in the latter part of the race and be a threat, just
like Hakkinen showed at Monza and Suzuka last year. 3. Other teams like Sauber, BAR, Williams and Jordan looked very good. Montoya was very fast and he showed the talent that he is famous for. Panis finished fourth but was unfortunate to be penalised 25 seconds and thus lost any chance of finishing in the points. Raikkonen was very good and so was Frentzen but the real gainer from the race was Heidfeld. He showed that he is very fast, stable and a smart driver (the battle with Frentzen comes to mind). This is something that he was unable to do last year, as Prost couldn't offer him much. He will be very pleased. 4.Minardi! Yes the team that nearly couldn't make it. They didn't even have a spare car, and on of there drivers was out in the opening few laps. But, Alonso I must say drove a very good race. He was able to complete the race and without many hiccups. Bravo, Paul Stoddard! 5.The teams that disappointed most- Arrows didn't look as if the had the car fit to race in, nor did Jaguar, as Irvine's career slips further into the doldrums. Benetton may have a revolutionary engine, but the don't look half-good. They have a lot of work to do, Prost, I may say looks as bad as it did last year, Alesi couldn't and most probably won't be able to get anything out of the car and Mazzacane will be like he was at Minardi. All said and done, the rookies look to have a good season and I must say that we are in for a great season of non-stop Formula One action. My sincerest of condolences are with the family of the marshal. I hope so are yours. |
