GP - 2nd Saturday Practice
Session starts with Fernando Alonso and Enrique Bernoldi first out on the track. 2 min: David Coulthard is going out followed by Olivier Panis 3 min: Jarno Trulli and Juan Pablo Montoya are out on the track. 5 min: Mika Hakkinen goes out on track 6 min: David Coulthard takes a trip over the grass at the Jones corner 7 min: Eddie Irvine is out on track 10 min: Jarno Trulli is faster than Mika Hakkinen and takes 3rd slot 11 min: Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest lap of 1.27.863 now almost 3 seconds faster than last years qualifying pole. 13 min: Tarso Marques parks in the gravel trap at the Brabham corner - he will not get out for the rest of the session 14 min: Yellow flags - most cars pitting 15 min: Jacques Villeneuve and Olivier Panis are out on the track 16 min: As the pace increase so does the temperature. Melbourne is in for a moderately hot day and temperatures at the track are already approaching 25 degrees C. 18 min: Michael Schumacher is fastest again 1.27.561 only to coast to a standstill at Lauda corner - Is Ferrari reliability a myth? 19 min: I wonder who is going to get the T-car if they can't fix Rubens Barrichello's in time for qualifying? 20 min: Fernando Alonso moves from 17th to 14th 23 min: In one lap Jarno Trulli moves up to 3rd place and David Coulthard goes even faster to claim 3rd back. 26 min: Mika Hakkinen is trying hard so we may have a change in the top again. No he is still in second but he is closing the gap and Michael Schumacher has no car left to defend his first place. 28 min: Ralf Schumacher moves up to 5th fastest. 32 min: The struggling Jenson Button records his best time of 1.32.381 35 min: Olivier Panis in 6th - the BARs are getting faster. 38 min: Nick Heidfeld posts a lap of 1.28.895 moving him into 8th. 40 min: Jacques Villeneuve is now in 9th. 42 min: Jarno Trulli is back in third. Is there enough time for Coulthard to claim it back? 43 min: Jenson Button and Juan Pablo Montoya have just got back on to the track - they will only have time for one fast lap. 44 min: And David Coulthard does it: he reclaims 3rd! 45 min: Heinz Harald Frentzen moves into 3rd, leapfrogging both David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli with a rapid 1.27.940 46 min: David Coulthard posts the fastest time on the last lap with a blistering 1.27.540 more than 3 seconds faster than last year's pole! Session over with David Coulthard ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen.
