Championship First Friday Practice Session Report - ResultsMichael Schumacher sets the fastest time of the
session almost a full second ahead of his team-mate Rubens Barrichello with
Nick Heidfeld in 3rd almost 2.5 seconds behind. A surprise Enrique Bernoldi in
the Arrows was 4th ahead of Jenson Button and Takuma Sato. Michael Schumacher's time was just under 0.9 seconds faster than the best time set on the 1st Friday practice session last year. While the practice session doesn't give a true indication of the actual order, it appears that Ferrari are still in a league of their own and it certainly appears as it the Bridgestone tyres are as good as the Michelin's in hot weather conditions. Jenson Button in the Renault was the only Michelin runner in the top 6. The pace of the Arrows while very impressive does seem to
indicate that they are running with low fuel loads especially given that Pedro
de la Rosa in the Jaguar using the same engines is over a 1.3 second off the
pace of Bernoldi. Ferrari's main rivals Williams and McLaren did not impress during the session with Montoya and Ralf in 10th and 11th while Raikkonen only managed 14th and Coulthard failed to set a lap time as his car seemed to have suffered an engine failure on his first flying lap. Mark Webber spun early in the session and ended up in the
gravel while a number of drivers spun but recovered including Michael
Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher. Takuma Sato in the Jordan covered the most number of laps with 20 followed by Alex Yoong and Giancarlo Fisichella with 19. David Coulthard only managed 3 laps, Mark Webber only managed 5 while Allan McNish covered 7. Unless Ferrari are running with low fuel loads, expect another Ferrari domination!
