Championship Race Report - ResultsMichael Schumacher wins a record 10 races in a season ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello and Juan Pablo Montoya. David Coulthard finished 4th ahead of Ralf Schumacher while Eddie Irvine scores the first point for the Jaguar team since the Australian Grand Prix. It was a crushing victory by Michael Schumacher as he displayed his superiority on this track over his team-mate Rubens Barrichello leading at one stage by over 20 seconds. The Ferraris were also dominant over the rest of the field with Montoya in 3rd lagging behind by over 47 seconds at one stage!. With this crushing victory by Michael, there wasn't much close action at the front and race was highlighted by the high number of engine failures and a few overtaking moves in the midfield. At the start of the race, Michael Schumacher had a good start and Rubens Barrichello in 3rd managed to jump Kimi Raikkonen. Juan Pablo Montoya and David Coulthard managed to get ahead of Ralf Schumacher. Juan Pablo Montoya managed to pass Kimi Raikkonen and take
3rd on the second lap while the 2 Ferraris in front started to build a gap of
over a second a lap to the car behind. After the first round of pit stops, Michael Schumacher
maintained his lead over Rubens Barrichello with Juan Pablo Montoya in 3rd.
David Coulthard managed to get ahead of Kimi Raikkonen while Trulli got ahead
of Ralf Schumacher after Ralf had a spin on the track. Kimi Raikkonen suffers an engine failure and Jarno Trulli
retires with a mechanical problem pushing Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Irvine
into the points. After the second round of pit stops, Michael Schumacher continued to lead Rubens Barrichello with Juan Pablo Montoya in 3rd. David Coulthard was 4th ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Irvine. In the latter stages of the race, Michael Schumacher started to ease off and the gap to Barrichello started to slowly narrow. Several drivers retires including Pedro de la Rosa with a suspension failure and Felipe Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella and Olivier Panis all suffering engine failures. On the final lap Michael Schumacher slowed down dramatically allowing Rubens Barrichello to finish the race just under 2 seconds behind. Juan Pablo Montoya was being chased by David Coulthard but without success and Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Irvine managed to bring their cars home in 5th and 6th. Eddie Irvine who had the one of longest streak of retirements this season bounced back today and not only managed to get his car to the finish line but also scored the 4th point for Jaguar this season. So Michael Schumacher now has a massive 122 points in the
Drivers' Championship ahead of Rubens Barrichello with 51 and Juan Pablo
