Championship Second Saturday Practice Session Report - ResultsRubens Barrichello seems to be
serious about taking the fight to Michael Schumacher but the real test is
still during qualifying as none of the times from practice count.
Barrichello's time though is very quick. He is over a second faster than
last year's qualifying time. Behind Rubens is Michael's brother Ralf, his
time is equally stunning as he is under 0.3 seconds slower than Rubens
indicating that the Michelin tyres appear to be quicker under these
conditions. Mika Hakkinen is 3rd with Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard
and Heinz Harald Frentzen making the top 6. There were no major incidents during this session although Alonso had to park his car towards the end of the session. A few drivers went across the gravel and Montoya spun but recovered. Nick Heidfeld covered the most number of laps with 17 followed by Barrichello and Frentzen with 16 each. Michael Schumacher was the driver with the least number of laps covered with 9 while most drivers covered between 10 and 14 laps. Doing some comparisons with last year's lap times, 14 drivers set times that are faster than the fastest time set during the Saturday practice sessions. Additionally, the top 9 times today are faster than the pole time of last year. The qualifying session will be very interesting as we will see how McLaren and the rest of the field compares to Ferrari, will Barrichello manage to keep the pressure on Michael and how will the Michelin runners (Williams and Jaguar in particular) do ?
