Championship Race Report - ResultsA stunning display from both Ferrari drivers saw Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello finish 1st and 2nd after being 11th and 10th early on in the race. David Coulthard managed to finish 3rd ahead of Heinz Harald Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. This race will be one to remember. At the start Frentzen appeared to have a problem, he was going slow and lined up at the back of the grid. This caused Fisichella some confusion and he overshot his starting position so the start had to be aborted. Fisichella had to start from the back of the grid. At the second formation, Juan Pablo Montoya stalled and after the mechanics failed to restart his car he jumped into the spare to start from the pitlane. Following the 2nd formation lap the race started and Michael Schumacher had a good start but Rubens Barrichello had to defend his position from Ralf who touched him and spun. Ralf rejoined at the back. There was more chaos behind them as Jos Verstappen somehow manages to move into 6th from 18th in what must be one of the best starts ever!. Mika Hakkinen had a bad start and lost 4 places while David Coulthard moved up from 8th to 4th. Frentzen also made a good start from 9th to 5th. Kimi Raikkonen retires with
mechanical problems and Olivier Panis blows and engine. Both Michael
Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello spin in the oil from the BAR but manage
to recover and rejoin in 3rd for Barrichello and 7th for Michael
Schumacher. Several drivers retired on this lap including Jacques Villeneuve, Nick Heidfeld, Juan Pablo Montoya, Eddie Irvine and Enrique Bernoldi. Once the safety car went in, the Ferrari pair and in particular Michael Schumacher were in a class of their own. Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello went from 11th and 10th to 1st and 2nd in 6 laps!. They both remained there for the rest of the race. Behind them there were a few fights but David Coulthard remained in 3rd while Jos Verstappen kept a few drivers behind him until he had to stop. Heinz Harald Frentzen had a good race and managed to finish in 4th despite the earlier problems while Ralf Schumacher who recovered from an early spin kept Mika Hakkinen behind him for a number of laps towards the end. So Michael Schumacher now has 20 points, 10 points ahead of both Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Next stop is Brazil in 2 weeks.
