Qualifying Session Report - ResultsJuan Pablo Montoya has grabbed his third Pole position of the season ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and David Coulthard make the top 6. The session started with drama
for the Minardi team when both Alex Yoong and Fernando Alonso suffered
transmission failure on their first run and both had to qualify use a
single spare car. Tomas Enge was the first to set a timed lap in the
session, soon after Ralf Schumacher grabs provisional pole only for Juan
Pablo Montoya to take it a minute later. With 10 minutes to go, Rubens Barrichello managed to set a time faster than that of his team-mate and Michael Schumacher tries to improve on his position but fails. Mika Hakkinen struggling in 8th place manages to improve 1 place with 6 minutes remaining but on his second flying lap he crashed heavily and the session was stopped. At the restart with just 4 minutes remaining none of the top 10 improved on their positions although Ralf Schumacher improved on his time. So Montoya has now managed to grab 3 Pole positions in his first season in Formula 1 compared with just 1 for Ralf Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello managed to out-qualify his team-mate Michael Schumacher for the first time this season. Jarno Trulli was impressive managing 5th place ahead of the 2 McLaren's. Pedro de la Rosa qualifies in 10th for the second race in a row. The BAR team appears to be heading to the back of the field with Villeneuve and Panis qualifying in 15th and 17th respectively. That is behind both Sauber's, both Jaguar's, both Benetton's and a Prost!. Both Villeneuve and Panis had their worst qualifying postilions this season. The 2 newcomers Tomas Enge and Alex Yoong didn't fair well with Enge in 20th place and Yoong in 22nd. In addition to Montoya who equalled his best, Rubens Barrichello equalled his best with second and Jenson Button had his best qualifying position this season in 11 place. In the battle of the
team-mates, the closest where Bernoldi (18th) just 0.067 seconds ahead of
Verstappen (19th), Barrichello (2nd) was only 0.096 seconds ahead of
Michael Schumacher (3rd) and Nick Heidfeld (8th) was only 0.178 seconds
ahead of Kimi Raikkonen (9th). Juan Pablo Montoya will then start from Pole aiming for that first win in Formula 1. Click here of the Qualifying table for the drivers this season
