Championship First Friday Practice Session Report - ResultsRubens Barrichello sets the fastest time of the session ahead of David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher. Juan Pablo Montoya, Ralf Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen make the top 6. Unlike the last few Friday practice sessions, Ferrari were
not dominant this session thanks to the warm temperatures that enabled the
Michelin runners to close the gap. Apart from the Ferraris, the Bridgestone runners aren't doing all that well with Takuma Sato in 10th the best of the rest on Bridgestones. Although it is very early stages, Jaguar appears to have made a step forward with their new package. At the back, Alex Yoong is struggling, his best time was almost 0.6 seconds off the 107% time of the fastest time set this session. If he doesn't improve, he may yet again fail to qualify and that could mean the end of his run at Minardi. That is if Paul Stoddart can afford that!. Unfortunately, the Arrows team did not participate in this session as they were still negotiating a way out of their financial crisis. Whilst there were a number of spins, there were no major incidents during the session although Jacques Villeneuve spun into the gravel at the end of the session and remained there. Mika Salo and Takuma Sato touched during practice. Salo sustained damage to his car preventing him back out on the track. Nick Heidfeld covered the most number of laps with 25 followed by Alex Yoong and Takuma Sato with 23 laps each. Mika Salo managed the least number of laps with 9 while Rubens Barrichello only covered 13 laps. Track conditions are expected to get even warmer in the second session. We'll see if Michelin can maintain their advantage.
