Championship Malaysian Grand Prix Race Report. Michael Schumacher wins his 9th race of the season and the 4th in a row ahead of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello. Mika Hakkinen was 4th ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Eddie Irvine. Michael Schumacher managed to keep David Coulthard behind
him in the last 10 laps when Coulthard was under a second behind. Rubens Barrichello still
suffering from the flu was a distant 3rd. Mika Hakkinen who virtually started from the
back of the grid after jumping the start and receiving a 10 second stop-go penalty managed
to finish in 4th. He set the fastest lap of the race slashing more than 2 seconds off the
lap record set by Michael Schumacher last year. Alexander Wurz who showed a lot of promise at the start of the weekend managed to finish in 7th outside the points but Benetton still retained 4th place thanks to the top 2 teams who make it almost impossible for the rest of the field to finish better than 5th unless they suffer a problem or retirement! Johnny Herbert had a suspension failure and spun and crashed heavily on his last race in Formula 1. He made it out of the car but was carried afterwards. He has undergone medical exams. Ricardo Zonta suffered and engine failure and so did both the Williams cars of Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button. Heinz Harald Frentzen continued his run of bad luck retiring with a problem with the power steering. The race started with Mika Hakkinen jumping the start and taking the lead. David Coulthard in 3rd also managed to get ahead of Michael Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello was 4th. Jacques Villeneuve had another good start and managed to get alongside Barrichello but went wide and lost the places he gained. At the back, the two Pedro's and Nick Heidfeld touched and retired. Jarno Trulli suffered a broken front nose and had to replace it eliminating any hope for scoring points. So Michael Schumacher ends the season with 108 points ahead of Mika Hakkinen with 89 points and David Coulthard with 73. Barrichello is 4th with 62. Ralf Schumacher is 5th with 24 points while Giancarlo Fisichella makes the top 6 with 18 points a single point ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. Ferrari win the Constructors championship with 170 points ahead of McLaren with 152 points. Williams are 3rd with 36 ahead of Benetton and BAR with 20 points. Jordan are 6th with 17 points. Click
