Championship Italian Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions Rubens Barrichello sets the fastest time of the session ahead of Jarno Trulli and Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard, Pedro de la Rosa and Jos Verstappen make the top 6. It is hard to tell the true pace of the cars from the first session as each team runs their own program but it is surprising to see both Ferrari's in the top 3 and especially Rubens Barrichello who is almost half a second faster than his team-mate Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard is 0.739 seconds behind Barrichello while Hakkinen didn't set a time!. The 2 Arrows are certainly on the pace with Pedro de la Rosa and Jos Verstappen in 5th and 6th while Williams are disappointing with Button in 12th and Ralf Schumacher way back in 21st. The Jaguar pair are also disappointing with Herbert in 16th and Irvine in 17th. Barrichello's time is just over half a second slower than the fastest time set here on Friday last year despite the slower first chicane. Click
here for the history of the session Rubens Barrichello remains at the top of the timesheets despite not improving on his time from the morning session. Michael Schumacher was only 0.060 seconds behind with Jarno Trulli in 3rd without improving this session. Mika Hakkinen who did not set a time in the first session was 4th ahead of David Coulthard who missed most of the second session after spinning into the gravel trap and retiring. Eddie Irvine was a surprise 6th after only managing 17th in the first session. Positions 7 to 10 are shared by the 2 Arrows and the 2 Saubers. Pedro de la Rosa dropped back to 7th after not improving while Pedro Diniz moved into 8th followed by Jos Verstappen. Mika Salo is in 10th. The session times do not appear to reflect the true pace of the cars and that is probably due to the extensive testing the teams have done last week. McLaren are expected to be dominating here and they are around half a second slower than Ferrari. Williams are also expected to do well but Button is in 11th and Ralf is in 21st!. BAR appear way back with Villeneuve in 16th and Zonta in 17th. Expect a lot of changes tomorrow! Click
