Drivers Championship Constructors
Championship German Grand Prix Race Report. A classic race which had everything. A first corner accident, plenty of overtaking, 2 safety car situations and rain with 13 laps to go. This is what all Formula 1 races should be like! Rubens Barrichello managed to win his first ever Formula 1 race in style. He started from 18th on the grid and was up to 6th by the fifth lap. With rain pouring down towards the end of the race, he took a risk and elected to stay on dry tyres while the others went for wets, the gamble paid off and he won. Mika Hakkinen came in second place and David Coulthard in 3rd. Jenson Button managed to finish in 4th ahead of Mika Salo and Pedro de la Rosa. Ralf Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, Jarno Trulli, Eddie Irvine and Gaston Mazzacane make the rest of the field as 11 cars retired including Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella who touched and crashed out at the first corner. This has made the drivers championship very close with Michael Schumacher on 56 points and David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen tied on 54 points each. Rubens Barrichello even has a chance (if Ferrari allows him) as he is now only 10 points behind Michael Schumacher. Lap by Lap Jenson Button stalls on the formation lap but gets away with the help of his mechanics. The race started with both Coulthard and Schumacher having relatively good starts but Hakkinen made a superb start managing to get between Fisichella and Michael Schumacher. Coulthard meanwhile moves across in front of Michael Schumacher to protect his position forcing Michael to move across in front of Giancarlo Fisichella who hits him and both go out. Meanwhile Hakkinen is already ahead of David Coulthard. Order after lap 1: Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli. Pedro de la Rosa, Johnny Herbert and Jos Verstappen make the top 6. Rubens Barrichello up to 9th from 18th. Rubens Barrichello continues to pass and moves up to 6th by lap 5 ! Order after lap 5: Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli. Pedro de la Rosa, Johnny Herbert and Rubens Barrichello make the top 6. Frentzen is up to 9th place by lap 8 while Rubens Barrichello manages to pass Johnny Herbert and Pedro de la Rosa. Both Frentzen and Barrichello appear to be on a 2 stop strategy. Johnny Herbert retires with clutch problems on lap 13. Order after lap 15: Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello is 3rd ahead of Jarno Trulli. Pedro de la Rosa and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. Both Barrichello and Frentzen pit and rejoin in 5th and 6th positions. Order after lap 20: Mika Hakkinen ahead of David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli. Pedro de la Rosa, Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. Villeneuve passes Irvine for 8th on lap 23 and on lap 25 the safety car goes out so the marshals can remove a lunatic who is walking on the track !!. This causes everyone to make their pit stop, the main loser is Coulthard who stays out while Hakkinen makes his pit stop. Order after lap 28 with safety car still on track: Mika Hakkinen ahead of Jarno Trulli and Rubens Barrichello. Pedro de la Rosa, Heinz Harald Frentzen and David Coulthard make the top 6. Safety car in on lap 29, Zonta touches Ralf Schumacher causing him to spin and on lap 30 Diniz drives into Alesi causing a massive accident. Both retire but are fine. Safety car is back out on the track. A lap later the safety car goes in, Alexander Wurz spins due to an electrical fault which damaged the gear selection mechanism. Order after lap 32: Mika Hakkinen ahead of Jarno Trulli and Rubens Barrichello. Pedro de la Rosa, Heinz Harald Frentzen and David Coulthard make the top 6. Rain starts falling and drivers start to pit for wet tyres.
Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard decide not to pit right away. Order after lap 35: Rubens Barrichello ahead of David Coulthard and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Ricardo Zonta, Mika Hakkinen and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6. Ricardo Zonta spins and crashes. Order after lap 40: Rubens Barrichello ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Mika Salo.
