German Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions

First Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time of the session more than half a second faster than Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello is less than 0.01 seconds behind Hakkinen while David Coulthard is 4th. Heinz Harald Frentzen and Ricardo Zonta make the top 6.

Ricardo Zonta did the most number of laps with 19 followed by Jenson Button with 18 laps. Gaston Mazzacane and Jos Verstappen did the least number of laps (apart from Trulli who just did an installation lap before stopping) with 8 and 9 laps respectively. Frentzen and Villeneuve only managed 10 laps each as they both suffered from problems in the session. Most other drivers did between 12 and 17 laps.

The time set by Michael Schumacher here is just 0.582 seconds slower than the pole time set here last year by Mika Hakkinen.

The session started with several drivers going out on their installation laps. Barrichello and Schumacher were last to go out on their installation laps almost 10 minutes into the session.

10 minutes into the session and no driver has set a timed lap.

Eddie Irvine is the first to set a timed lap with a time of 1:47.263 followed by Jenson Button. Several drivers follow including Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello who immediately set the fastest times and start exchanging fastest laps. Neither McLaren has set a timed lap yet.
Trulli suffers a hydraulic failure and stops on the track. Session over for him.

20 minutes into the session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine. Ralf Schumacher, Ricardo Zonta and Jenson Button make the top 6.

Frentzen improves to 3rd but suffers similar problems to those by Trulli, he manages to get back to the pits. Ricardo Zonta jumps into 2nd just 0.021 seconds behind Michael Schumacher. BAR are using a new specification Honda engine at Hockenheim.

30 minutes into the session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Ricardo Zonta and Rubens Barrichello. Heinz Harald Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

David Coulthard goes out just after the halfway mark and immediately sets the 3rd fastest time. A lap later he goes quickest, more than half a second faster than Michael Schumacher's time. His time was 1:44.379.
The top 5 times set so far are already faster than the fastest time set here on both Friday sessions last year.

Hakkinen goes out and sets the 6th fastest time. Villeneuve, Trulli, Heidfeld and Mazzacane have yet to set a fast time.

Rubens Barrichello retakes the top spot from David Coulthard with a time of 1:44.128

40 minutes into the session and it is Rubens Barrichello ahead of David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher, Ricardo Zonta and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6.

Michael Schumacher moves into second place while Frentzen appears to have his problems sorted out as he moves into 5th. Jacques Villeneuve has yet to set a fast time.
Michael Schumacher goes fastest with a time of 1:43.532 more than half a second ahead of Rubens Barrichello.

10 minutes to go and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Ricardo Zonta make the top 6.

Both Coulthard and Hakkinen go out in the final 10 minutes and so does Jacques Villeneuve who was waiting in the pits while a problem with a front wishbone was sorted out. Hakkinen improves to 2nd while Jacques Villeneuve amazingly moves into 7th place on his first fast run.
Jenson Button spins and hits the barrier on his way into the pits. His car suffers some damage.

Final Order: Michael Schumacher over half a second ahead of Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello is 3rd followed by David Coulthard, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Ricardo Zonta.

 Second Practice Session:

Michael Schumacher remains the fastest driver today despite not setting a faster time this session. In fact, of the top 6 only the 2 Jordan drivers, Frentzen and Trulli have improved. This was mainly due to a wet track that started to dry out half way into the session.

Giancarlo Fisichella did the most number of laps with 22 followed by Michael Schumacher with 20. Gaston Mazzacane only did 2 laps as he crashed while Ralf Schumacher only did 9 laps as he lost time while his team changed his engine due to an oil leak. Most drivers did between 12 and 16 laps.

The session started under wet and rainy conditions. Ricardo Zonta was the first out of the pits on wet tyres followed by Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard.

Ricardo Zonta sets a time of 2:01.812 and then spins. Gaston Mazzacane crashes and Michael Schumacher almost spins and sets a time of 1:58.586.

The rain stops but the track is very wet.

10 minutes into the session and no times have improved since the 1st session.

Heinz Harald Frentzen goes fastest in the wet with a time 1:57.131. A dry line is starting to form and the times start to drop. Hakkinen sets a time of 1:56.775.
One of the problems at this circuit is that parts of it dry quickly while other parts are still wet.

20 minutes into the session and the top 6 remain the same as in the 1st session with Michael Schumacher ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. David Coulthard, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Ricardo Zonta make the top 6.

Jarno Trulli finally sets his first timed lap of the day with a time of 1:59.913 while his teammate Frentzen goes fastest in the wet with a time of 1:55.832.

30 minutes into the session and no change in the top 6 however the lap times start to drop quickly with Jean Alesi setting a best time this session of 1:47.6

Marc Gene spins and gets into the gravel trap. Both Minardi's are out this session.

40 minutes into the session and there is still no change in the top 6 but Jarno Trulli sets a time of 1:46.811 on a semi dry track.

With 15 minutes remaining, the times are now comparable to the 1st session as Trulli improves again to 15th and Jean Alesi improves on his 1st session times while Jos Verstappen suffers a gearbox failure.

50 minutes to go and still no improvement on the times of the first session but Hakkinen sets a time of 1:44.213 which is less than 0.1 seconds slower than his best time in the first session.

Pedro de la Rosa improves his time and moves into 10th position while Mika Salo moves into 9th.
With only a few minutes remaining, almost all the drivers go out on their last run of the day with Heinz Harald Frentzen moving from 5th to 2nd only 0.043 seconds behind Michael Schumacher. Jarno Trulli enters the top 6 with a time of 1:44.521.

Final Order: Michael Schumacher ahead of Heinz Harald Frentzen and Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.
