Drivers Championship Constructors
Championship Belgian Grand Prix Race Report. Mika Hakkinen wins ahead of Michael Schumacher in a thrilling race between the two. Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6 It is Hakkinen's 5th win of the season and his first ever here at Spa. He now leads the championship by 6 points ahead of Michael Schumacher with David Coulthard a distant 3rd 13 points behind Mika Hakkinen. McLaren lead the constructor's championship by 8 points. The race was an interesting duel between Mika Hakkinen and
Michael Schumacher. The race started behind the safety car as the track was damp in order
to avoid a repeat of the 98 pileup at La Source. After a few laps the cars formed a dry
line and went back in for dry tyres. David Coulthard was yet again a victim of bad pit strategy when McLaren called in Hakkinen late to switch to dry tyres forcing Coulthard to stay out an extra lap, this cost him a few places but eventually managed to finish in 4th place although his championship hopes are fading quickly. Jenson Button drove a good race however his lack of experience in the big boys league forced him to commit a number of mistakes early in the race letting Michael Schumacher pass him and then touching Trulli and forcing him out of the race. Button eventually finished in 5th place. Ferrari and Rubens Barrichello committed a rare mistake as Barrichello ran out of fuel, his mechanics retrieved him from outside the pit lane but retired. Only 5 cars retired during the race. Trulli, Fisichella, Heidfeld, Alesi and Barrichello 4 races to go and it appears that the championship will be fought between Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher Click
