ahead of Jenson Button. Jarno Trulli was 3rd ahead of his teammate Heinz Harald Frentzen
who only managed a single lap this session after stopping with gearbox problems. Ralf
Schumacher was 5th ahead of David Coulthard in 6th place. David Coulthard and Ricardo Zonta did the most number of laps with 13 each. Several other drivers did 12 laps each. Jean Alesi and Jos Verstappen didn't complete any laps while Frentzen only did 1 lap. Most drivers did between 10 and 12 laps. There were no major incidents during the session. It is very hard to predict what will happen in qualifying
as we don't know what the teams are running in terms of tyres and fuel loads. However
Jordan and Williams appear strong while Ferrari appear to be struggling. 0 Min - Session underway with dry conditions. Temperature at 21 degrees 2 Min - No cars have gone out yet! 5 Min - Both Williams drivers go out followed by Trulli and Irvine 6 Min - Now over 10 cars are on the track! 8 Min - No improvements on the first session yet 10 Min - Michael Schumacher improves and moves into 6th position with a time of 1:52.282 11 Min - Frentzen has stopped on the track. Michael Schumacher is 4th ahead of David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher. Villeneuve, Frentzen, Herbert and Barrichello make the top 10. Mika was the only driver to set a time under the 1:51 mark. Equally impressive were Jarno Trulli in the Jordan and Jenson Button in the Williams (in his first appearance at Spa in a Formula 1 car) both not just outqualifying their teammates but also Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello had a bad session only managing 10th behind Johnny Herbert in the Jaguar!. Benetton were the worst off as they had problems with both their cars and ended up with only the spare car for both drivers to qualify with. Wurz had an engine failure on his first lap while Fisichella had to abandon his car too. Both eventually qualified in 11th for Fisichella and 19th for Wurz! On the last run of the session, Jean Alesi spun at the bus stop causing a yellow flag situation which forced all the drivers behind him to slow down. With the exception of Wurz and Fisichella who only managed 5 of their allowed 12 laps, all other drivers ran 11 or 12 laps. So while Mika Hakkinen appears untouchable, the gap between 2nd and 8th is just half a second which indicates that Jordan, Williams, Ferrari and BAR are close here and with Coulthard stuck in 5th place, the race should be an exciting one! 0 Min - Session underway with dry conditions.
