Championship Belgian Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions David Coulthard sets the fastest time of the session over 0.8 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. Mika Hakkinen, Jarno Trulli, Rubens Barrichello and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6. David Coulthard was the only driver to go under the 1:54 mark and faster than the best time set here on Friday last year. What is more interesting is that the time he set was on his very first flying lap! Gaston Mazzacane did the most number of laps with 15
followed by Wurz, Button and Heidfeld. Jean Alesi's car stopped on the installation lap so
he ended up with no laps, Frentzen only did 4 laps and so did Hakkinen. Most drivers did
between 8 and 12 laps. 0 Min - Session underway with dry and sunny conditions. Temperature at 20 degrees 0 Min - Both the Prost cars are out followed by the 2 BAR's and the 2 Minardi's 0 Min - Jean Alesi stops on the track, session over for him! 1 Min - A few more drivers go out on their installation lap including Ralf Schumacher, Button and Wurz 3 Min - Most drivers have gone out on their installation laps except for Ferrari. No set times yet 5 Min - All cars have returned to the pits, no activity at the moment 8 Min - Still no cars on the track 10 Min - Gaston Mazzacane is out again to do his first flying lap 12 Min - Gaston Mazzacane sets the first time lap of the day with a time of 2:00.031 - Slow! 14 Min - Marc Gene goes out as well while Mazzacane improves to 1:59.855. (Best time on Friday last year was David Coulthard with a time of 1:53.577 16 Min - Marc Gene's time first timed lap is 1:59.273 and takes 1st 19 Min - Jenson Button and Jos Verstappen go out on the track 20 Min - Alexander Wurz goes out as well. 23 Min - Jenson Button goes first clocking 1:57.834 while Verstappen clocks a 1:58.222 25 Min - Order : Button, Gene, Verstappen, Mazzacane 26 Min - Alexander Wurz goes fastest with a time of 1:56.847 while Verstappen goes second 28 Min - 7 drivers with set times. timed results Despite not improving on his time of the first session, David Coulthard remains fastest over half a second ahead of his teammate Mika Hakkinen. Johnny Herbert is a surprise third while Jacques Villeneuve is also a surprise in 4th place. Michael Schumacher is in 5th position while Alexander Wurz is in good form in 6th place. Several drivers didn't improve on their times as they were testing race setup. There were several contrasts between teammates with Herbert in 3rd while Irvine was in 16th. Villeneuve in 4th while Zonta was in 15th. Verstappen in 7th while Pedro de la Rosa was in 20th. On the other hand a few teammates were very close with Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button in 12th and 13th while Jean Alesi and Nick Heidfeld make the back of the grid in 21st and 22nd Jacques Villeneuve made the most number of laps this session with 20 followed by Barrichello and Zonta with 18 each. Jos Verstappen did the least number of laps with 7 followed by David Coulthard with 8 and Pedro de la Rosa with 9. Most drivers did between 12 and 16 laps. David Coulthard remains the only driver to set a time faster than last year's best Friday time. There were no major incidents during this session. 0 Min - Session underway with dry and sunny conditions. Temperature at 22 degrees 0 Min - Several drivers go out on the track including Frentzen, Mazzacane and Trulli. Frentzen did not set a competitive time in the first session. 2 Min - Frentzen improves immediately and moves into 13th position while Jean Alesi sets his first time of the day in 21st 4 Min - Alesi moves into 17th position. M Schumacher and David Coulthard go out on the track 7 Min - No improvements so far except from Frentzen and Alesi. David Coulthard is over a second slower than his best time 10 Min - A few drivers are on track but still no improvements so far. 12 Min - It appears that most drivers are testing race configuration as no times have improved 15 Min - Top 6 remains: Coulthard, M Schumacher, Hakkinen, Trulli, Barrichello and Villeneuve 17 Min - Frentzen is on track trying to improve on his 13th position, his teammate Jarno Trulli is up in 4th 20 Min - Giancarlo Fisichella moves into 3rd place just behind Michael Schumacher. Alesi moves into 15th 25 Min - Top 6: Coulthard, M Schumacher, Fisichella, Hakkinen, Trulli and Barrichello 27 Min - Hakkinen moves into 2nd with a time under the 1:54 mark.
