Championship First Friday Practice Session Report - ResultsMichael Schumacher sets the fastest
time of the session ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello.
Michael's time was just 0.05 seconds faster than Hakkinen's indicating
that McLaren have improved on their performance in Malaysia. We cannot read too much into the times as these are practice sessions but the fact that Hakkinen's time is that close to Schumacher's is encouraging to see while it is not so encouraging to see the BMW and Honda powered teams not doing so well here. The picture could change a lot though! There were no major incidents during the session apart from a few spins and visits to the gravel traps. Hakkinen spun but managed to recover while Coulthard appeared to have missed his braking point at one corner and went straight on but managed to recover as well. Most teams were trying different front wing settings during the practice session. There are 4 Brazilian drivers and they are all doing very well with Barrichello in 3rd, Burti in 7th, Bernoldi in 11th and Marques in 16th! (Burti and Bernoldi have never driven a Formula 1 car on this track before) Luciano Burti and Fernando Alonso covered the most number of laps with 22 followed by Jarno Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve with 21. Ralf Schumacher had a bad session only completing 3 laps as his car suffered gearbox problems, Fisichella only managed to cover 9 laps as he only managed to go out with 15 minutes remaining in the session. Michael Schumacher only covered 12 laps while most other drivers covered between 15 and 20 laps.
