Championship Monaco Grand Prix Saturday Practice and Qualifying Michael Schumacher sets the fastest time 0.15 seconds ahead of Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello becomes more competitive today and is under a tenth of a second slower the Mika Hakkinen. Most impressive this session though is Jean Alesi in the Prost who is 4th fastest just 0.3 seconds slower than the fastest time set !!. David Coulthard and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. Michael Schumacher's time is just 2 tenths slower than the pole time set last year here by Mika Hakkinen and there is a practice session left yet before qualifying this afternoon. Pole time will probably be over a second faster than last year. The session started with most drivers going out on their installation laps with the exception of Michael Schumacher who goes out a few minutes later. Gaston Mazzacane sets the first timed lap with a time of 1:38.171, he is then followed by Salo with a time of 1:36.245. 15 minutes into the session and it is Heinz Harald Frentzen ahead of Marc Gene and Jenson Button. Rubens Barrichello, Pedro de la Rosa and Jos Verstappen make the top 6. 25 minutes into the session and the times are dropping dramatically with Mika Hakkinen fastest with a time of 1:21.374 ahead of Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Alexander Wurz, Jenson Button and Giancarlo Fisichella. 10 minutes remaining in this 45 minute session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Alexander Wurz goes off at Sainte Devote. During the last 5 minutes, Heinz Harald Frentzen spins but recovers while Gaston Mazzacane stalls. The final order for the session is: Michael Schumacher ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Jean Alesi, David Coulthard and Heinz Harald Frentzen make the top 6. Click here for the timed results David Coulthard sets the fastest time of the session ahead of Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella. Jarno Trulli, Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello make the top 6. While most drivers improved on their times set in the first session, a few drivers didn't including Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello who despite that are 5th and 6th in the final order. It will be interesting to see how they qualify. The session started with all drivers going out and the first to improve was Ralf Schumacher with a time of 1:22.681. 10 minutes into the session and already 2 drivers are off with Nick Heidfeld and Heinz Harald Frentzen spinning. Both are stuck and cannot resume the session. Michael Schumacher is fastest with a time of 1:20.503 (0.001 seconds faster than Pole time last year) ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and David Coulthard. 20 minutes into the session and it is Michael Schumacher ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and David Coulthard. Hakkinen, Barrichello and Alesi make the top 6. 15 minutes to go and David Coulthard manages to set a better time than that of Michael Schumacher. Just after he sets the fastest time he spins and stalls at Sainte Devote. Michael Schumacher is second and Giancarlo Fisichella in third. Less than 0.2 seconds separates the top 3. With 10 minutes to go, most drivers are testing qualifying setup, Coulthard is still fastest ahead of Michael Schumacher and Fisichella. Jarno Trulli enters the top 6 in 4th position ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. In the final minutes of the session there heavy traffic with a lot of drivers trying to improve their times, the final order is David Coulthard ahead of Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella. Jarno Trulli, Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello make the top 6. Eddie Irvine hits the tyre barrier on his final lap. Only David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher manage to set a time faster than the pole time set last year. Qualifying will be interesting as it will will be very hard to avoid the traffic on this tight circuit. Heinz Harald Frentzen was 4th followed by Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Jean Alesi was also impressive qualifying his Prost in 7th position while his teammate Nick Heidfeld was way back in 18th place more than 1.5 seconds behind. Only the top 4 drivers have clocked a time under the 1:20 mark and Michael Schumacher has managed to go more than a second faster than last year's pole position set by Mika Hakkinen. Mika Hakkinen struggled during qualifying and was in 17th position only 6 minutes from the end, each of his fast laps were interrupted by traffic so even though 5th is not that good for him, given the circumstances it is pretty impressive. Less than 1 seconds separates the top 6 and 2 seconds separate the top 12 hence the field is not as close as they have been at other circuits. The session started quietly as usual and Ricardo Zonta was the first out 5 minutes into the session. He sets a time of 1:25.736. 5 minutes later, his teammate Jacques Villeneuve goes out and on his first lap, the Honda engine blows. Villeneuve parks the car and runs back to the pits to take the spare car. 15 minutes into the session and only Ricardo Zonta has a time set. 20 minutes into the session and Pedro Diniz and Jos Verstappen appear on the track. Several other drivers follow including both McLarens. Order after 25 minutes: David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen. 30 minutes into the session and the order is changing rapidly with 16 drivers now with times set. Order after 35 minutes: Jarno Trulli, Michael Schumacher, Eddie Irvine, Heinz Harald Frentzen, Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Everyone except Alesi have set a timed lap, Alesi appears to have a problem with his race car and switches to the spare. With 20 minutes to go and it is Michael Schumacher who is fastest ahead of Frentzen and Coulthard. Both Michael Schumacher and Frentzen have set a time under the 1:20 mark. 15 minutes to go and Marc Gene spins on the track spoiling the fast laps for all the drivers behind him !!. 10 minutes to go and Michael Schumacher goes fastest again dropping below the 1:19.5 mark with Jarno Trulli and David Coulthard behind. Mika Hakkinen meanwhile is struggling with traffic, he is back in 17th position !!. Pedro de la Rosa crashes into the barriers at La Rascasse. With just a few minutes to go Mika Hakkinen finally manages to put in a fast lap and ends up in 5th place. No one in the top 6 improve mainly due to traffic so the final order is Michael Schumacher ahead of Jarno Trulli and David Coulthard. Heinz Harald Frentzen, Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello make the top 6. |
