Championship European Grand Prix Race Report Michael Schumacher wins an exciting European Grand Prix ahead of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella and Pedro de la Rosa make the top 6. The race was affected by rain from lap 10 onwards. Several spins and accidents occurred because of the rain and only 9 cars finished with 7 of those at least a lap down. There were more overtaking manoeuvres at this race than all the previous races combined ! Race Start: Mika Hakkinen manages to pass both David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher to takes the lead, Michael Schumacher also gets ahead of David Coulthard who ends up 3rd. Rubens Barrichello maintains 4th place but an amazing Jacques Villeneuve storms from 9th to 5th with Ralf Schumacher losing a place to make the top 6. Jarno Trulli spins out on the first lap and claims that Fisichella caused his spin. 2 laps later his team-mate Heinz Harald Frentzen retires with engine problems. Lap 5: Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 0.5 seconds. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Jacques Villeneuve and Giancarlo Fisichella make the top 6. Giancarlo Fisichella passes Ralf Schumacher and Pedro de la Rosa in 7th is catching Ralf. Lap 10: Hakkinen leads Michael Schumacher by 0.6 seconds. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6. Giancarlo Fisichella passes Jacques Villeneuve. It starts to rain. Michael Schumacher passes Mika Hakkinen Lap 15: Michael Schumacher leads the race from Mika Hakkinen. Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard, Giancarlo Fisichella and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6. Most drivers pit for wet tyres. Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher pit and take longer than expected, Michael Schumacher rejoins in 1st but Mika Hakkinen loses a place to David Coulthard.
