British Grand Prix Race Report

David Coulthard wins the British GP ahead of team-mate Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button and Jarno Trulli make the top 6.

The race was a battle won in the pits between the cars on a 2 stop strategy and those on a one stop strategy. It appeared that those on a one stop strategy benefited more.

Race Start:

Rubens Barrichello and Heinz Harald Frentzen have a clean start, so does David Coulthard who overtakes Mika Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher has a very good start and gets alongside Mika Hakkinen, they almost touch and Michael backs off and loses several places. Jacques Villeneuve comes from 10th to get ahead of Michael Schumacher.

Race order after 1st lap:

Rubens Barrichello, Heinz Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Jenson Button, Jacques Villeneuve

Michael Schumacher who is in 7th place attempts to pass Jacques Villeneuve but couldn't, he gets out of his racing line and his brother Ralf Schumacher manages to pass him and a lap later pass Jacques Villeneuve as well. Ralf appears to be on a different strategy.

Race Order after lap 5:
Rubens Barrichello, Heinz Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Jenson Button, Ralf Schumacher

The top 6 remain fairly close with only 4 seconds separating them until the first pit stops. Jacques Villeneuve cannot match the pace of the top 6 but manages to keep Michael Schumacher behind him until he pits.

Race Order after lap 20:
Rubens Barrichello, Heinz Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Jenson Button, Ralf Schumacher

Verstappen pits and retires on lap 20
Frentzen pits on lap 24
Ralf Schumacher pits on lap 24
Jenson Button pits on lap 25, Ralf passes Button through the pit stop
Pedro de la Rosa retires on lap 26

Race Order after lap 30:
Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher, Heinz Harald Frentzen.

Coulthard manages to get past Barrichello and immediately increases the gap. A few laps later both Coulthard and Hakkinen make their first and only pit stop. Coulthard rejoins in 3rd place behind Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher (both have yet to stop) and Heinz Harald Frentzen who has stopped once. Mika Hakkinen rejoin behind Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button in 7th place.

On lap 35, Rubens Barrichello spins, recovers but immediately pits and retires with a suspected hydraulic problem. Michael Schumacher takes the lead and starts putting very fast laps in preparation for his one and only pit stop.
Ricardo Zonta spins and retires on lap 36.

Race Order after lap 37:
Michael Schumacher, Heinz Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button, Mika Hakkinen.

Michael Schumacher makes his first and only pit stop and rejoins behind Jenson Button but ahead of Jacques Villeneuve.

Frentzen takes the lead but only for a few laps as he pits and rejoins behind Michael Schumacher and so does Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button
Both Jaguars experience trouble on their second pit stop

Race Order after lap 50:
David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, Heinz Harald Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button.

Nick Heidfeld retires on lap 51
Frentzen appears to be having a problem with gear selection and retires on lap 54
Jacques Villeneuve moves into 6th place after Frentzen retires but is being attacked by Jarno Trulli who passes him. Villeneuve immediately pits after being passed and retires with gearbox problems

The race order at the front remains as is until the end of the race although it appeared that Mika Hakkinen was pushing hard to catch David Coulthard however his pit crew told him to take it easy. He did however clock the fastest lap time during the final laps of the race.

Race Order at the finish:
David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button, Jarno Trulli.

So McLaren have finished first and second, Michael Schumacher drove impressively to jump from 8th to 3rd although the 2 stop strategy of Frentzen and both the Williams helped in that jump. Impressive performance from both the Williams and especially Jenson Button who manages to keep with Ralf Schumacher who is much more experienced than him in Formula 1.

The next round is at Barcelona in Spain, Michael Schumacher lead David Coulthard by 20 points and Mika Hakkinen by 22 points. While the gap is large, it is not impossible for either the McLaren's and even Barrichello (who has 9 points) to catch up as there are 13 more races to go this season.

The Constructor's championship seems to be a battle between Ferrari and McLaren with Ferrari having a 17 point lead at the moment but if McLaren finishes the next 2 races in first and second, they will be leading so there is not really much in it.
