Championship British Grand Prix Friday Practice Sessions Heinz Harald Frentzen sets the fastest time of the session ahead of Eddie Irvine and David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen, Jarno Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6. The session started in damp conditions but it was not raining, Jos Verstappen was the first to set a fast time followed by Mika Hakkinen. Both Jaguar's were the first to hit problems, Johnny Herbert's car stopped on the Start-Finish straight while Irvine after setting a fast time goes slow into the pits with a suspected problem. Ralf Schumacher didn't manage to set a time as he too parks his car on the grass. With 30 minutes into the session, it was Frentzen, Irvine, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Trulli and Villeneuve. Michael Schumacher was the only driver (without mechanical problems) who has not set a fast time yet. It started to rain heavily just after the middle of the session !! Pedro de la Rosa was the first out on wet tyres, his first 'wet' time was 1:42.697. Gene followed with a time of 1:42.767. Soon after Pedro de la Rosa stopped on the track. Most drivers follow with Michael Schumacher setting the fastest 'wet' time early on with a time of 1:38.354. He improves to 1:37.117 however Frentzen sets an even quicker time at 1:36.265. Minutes before the end of the session, Jacques Villeneuve's car stops on the track. Click here for
the timed results None of the top 10 drivers managed to improve on the times set during the first session as this session was all wet. So overall, Heinz Harald Frentzen was fastest ahead of Eddie Irvine and David Coulthard. Mika Hakkinen, Jarno Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6. The second session started with a wet track but with only drizzle. Michael Schumacher was the first to come out followed by Mika Salo. Several other drivers join and a dry line starts to emerge. A few drivers switch to dry tyres, one of them was Ralf Schumacher who sets a time of 1:30.593. Alesi and Mazzacane spin but keep going. Rain starts falling heavily again towards the middle of the session, David Coulthard's car stops on the track and the 4 wheel drive that attempts to clear David's car gets stuck in the mud forcing a red flag situation !!. A few minutes later the session is restarted and Mazzacane spins and gets stuck in the mud. Alesi spins but recovers but Zonta is not so fortunate as he spins and gets stuck in the mud as well. Just a few minutes from the end, Jean Alesi spins and stops on the track. Apart from Ralf Schumacher and Johnny Herbert (neither recorded a fast time in the first session), no one improved their time. Tomorrow's sessions will be interesting as the weather is expected to be much of the same. Click here for
